Biography of Matt Tolfrey

Matt Tolfrey's approach to djing is simple, work hard for what you want to achieve but make sure you always have a good time doing it. Whilst growing up in Bahrain in the relative cultural seclusion of an Ex-pat community, his elder brother assaulted his consciousness with a host of mix tapes from Ibiza and a wealth of early nineties material from the likes of reigning DJ supreme, Sasha. It was an initiation that instilled in Matt a sense of the way music can reach people regardless of circumstance. Moving back to the UK at 16 he was able to invest in a pair of decks and soon got a slot playing in a Worcester bar. Upon taking a year out after finishing school, Matt travelled Australia and, taking his newly gained mixing skills, scored a memorable set at infamous outdoor party place, Bondi Beach.

On his return to the UK Matt started at Nottingham Trent University where in his first year he was given a show on the Nottingham radio station Fly FM. Since the shows inception three years ago, 'Junk Funk' has gone on to win the station's best newcomer award and has seen Matt promoted to head of night-time DJs. 2002 saw the show gain increased support from local independent record shop Funky Monkey, and also from underground club The Bomb who have been instrumental in organising exclusive guest slots from top name DJs such as Craig Richards, Jay Tripwire and Dave Congreve. In addition to his show on Fly FM, Matt has also recently been asked to play once a month for American internet radio website Proton radio.

Mirroring this success on the airwaves Matt has been making his own moves within the Nottingham clubscene. Whether playing at his long-term, ongoing residency at The Bomb, as well as his recently gained position as Bi-Weekly resident of Stealth, Matt works continually at establishing his own sound. Sonically ambitious, Matt's voice is one that amalgamates elements of the sounds he loves. Fusing the jacking, zig-zag soul of Chicagoans like Derrick Carter and Sneak with Tyrant's driving, low-slung breaks and bleeps, Matt’s performances in 2002/03 have ensured that his will be one of the emergent names to watch in the near future. From the all-night New Years Eve Frontroom Bomb set with local production duo Sound Alliance, to playing for four hours alongside Craig Richards in the main room at Tyrant in February 2003, June 2003 and Novemeber 2003, his success is highly encouraging. The May bank holiday of 2003 also saw him playing alongside his DJ hero Derrick Carter for the Drop the Bomb boat party. It's this type of progression forward that has the same hallmarks as one of the delicately nuanced, astutely sequenced set lists he is responsible for.

And while the future holds more djing for Matt, he also wants to be involved in the other aspects of dance music and has recently begun to delve in production work under the moniker Out-ed. The first track finished, Fly Me, was recently signed to Northern Lights for there Spring Sampler, and there is more in the pipeline. Given his recent track record of success you wouldn't bet against his enthusiasm and ambition to convert this drive into something positive. And, you can be sure he'll be enjoying every minute of the journey.
