Biography of Swayzak

Swayzak - apparently in Polish this means 'union,' or so someone told us! Swayzak was born in 1996 in London, UK. James Taylor and David Brown, friends and former work colleagues, have made music together since 1993. Brown was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1966 and Taylor was born in London in 1967. They started their own label out of lack of interest from other labels. This is a true union of British culture, Swayzak Recordings.

The first release was in 1997 titled Bueno / Fukumachi, which was well received and the follow up, Speedboat / Low Res Skyline was deemed a classic by many trainspotters. Then they went on to record 'Snowboarding in Argentina,' a long playing deep and minimal house must have. Since then, Swayzak have never looked back and enjoy making music still as an alternative to working.

Having released 5 artist albums, 2 DJ compilations and several other projects (they're still waiting to be paid for some of them!), Swayzak never shy away from making music, but often take a laid back approach hence their new album 'Route de la Slack,' a double CD of remixes and rarities. It was released 20 March 2006.

Taylor runs the 240 volts label and records his own material under the name 'Darkfarmer' and 'James Taylor.' Brown plays most weekends with percussionist Francesco Brini as 'Swayzak' and DJ Roger 23 as 'Swayzak Soundsystem.' Brown also runs the 'Voltmusik' label and is planning a new venture with Roger 23.

Comment: this download includes both parts of a rare set by
swayzak, which takes us on a musical journey....
part one is more funky soul oriented, think pure 1970s,
which moves onto a much more retro new wave
sound of the silly 1980s. then hold onto your hats kids,
the 1990s harshness is barely referred to as the
sounds of the current decade set in + take over in part 2.

the lushness of their musical past colliding with
the present, + hopefully the future, will definitely please
anyone with a weakness for such trips down memory
lane straight into what's relevent now. definitely a very
challenging one for the musically faint-hearted.

as kostadelmar wrote, 'very intelligent music'
+ he's absolutely right. ;)

enjoy!

Comment: Probably one of my favorites this year. I've seen them live and it was a great show, but they played more off their studio releases. More of a structure and predictabilty, but this set was off the hook. It was exactly what I was hoping for. It brought that vibe from the commercial albums but just let the beats and the rhytms just run where they pleased into some interesting places. I'm so glad someone found this set and shared it. Take advantage of this opportunity. I preferred part 1 overall, but part 2 had some really good stuff too. Just listen people!!!!!

Comment: :-? Oops. I don't know why, but I don't like the sound of Swayzak very much. Some moments are great, but some of them are boring to me. So in overall I don't rate it very good. If someone like it (according to comments above, most of downloaders do so), then can really enjoy it, because it is long and recorded in excellent sound quality.

Comment: The sound quality is excellent and the choice of tracks is interesting, offering a wide range of views on the dance music of the past and the present

So why did I not rate the set as a 10?
The set displays a lack of mixing skills: at times, the tracks start drifting apart (which, of course can, but shouldn't really happen...) and some transitions leave a lot of room untl the next track kicks in properly.
Another thing is that tracks with a lot of harmonic content are juxtaposed with others that are kept extremely minimal (check part one around minutes 18-20 to see what I mean - this one is not very smart at all if you ask me...) which sometimes results in a loss of pressure and tension...

I recommended it nonetheless as it's both enjoyable for listeners and interesting for DJs - as they can clearly see what's working and what's not...

Otherwise a very interesting set...probably I am too much of a perfectionist...

Comment: a musical journey, it needs to be taken as such, however i did not wind up in the land of 'minimal goodness' that was heralded in the previous comments... a minimal approach maybe, but still hard house for the most part, with some moments in the second set... im sure if you like the production stuff then youl like it,` but it isn't just any old set you can bang on and listen through.

Comment: This is typically Swayzak for Me. I have their albums and some of their mixes and this what I expected. It always sounds strange, different but very melodic, housy, minimalistic and deep. That's why I like them. But they are moving to much to electro, like in part 2, part 1 is simply great. Part 2 is still good, but I hope that they will come back to their dark and experimental roots (like legendary Snowboarding in Argentina album). The recording is very, very good.
