Biography of DJ Disciple

I was born into this world 'David Banks' and as soon as I could breathe I felt the vibe. I've been involved with music for my entire life; my father played piano for Miles Davis and my brother played bass for George Benson. A myriad of Brooklyn musical influences drew me to the turntables where I could blend all the diverse genres I was listening to into one continuous mix. I guess I began my career as a Gospel DJ getting my first break at a gig at NYC underground party called the Choice and Wild Pitch. I also played at the superb Zanzibar in New Jersey in Tony Humphries' absence. I used to have this well-known mix show on New York 91.5 where I used my aka, DJ Acetate, for all those unreleased lost gems. Now life is good and I get to spin all around the world.

They say I am one of New York's more influential players on the underground scene. An eclectic mindset saves me from stagnancy. I really like to play the board as far as my sets go, from sexy disco to soulful house right through to the harder tribal stuff. My style seems to go down very well, keeping me on my toes across North America, Europe and the world!

My label, Catch 22 Recordings, has been producing and remixing talents the likes of M & S, Taka Boom, and Dawn Tallman. Other releases from Catch 22, include 'Put Your Hands Up', by the Black & White Brothers (my most successful record licensed in over 8 territories) and DJ Dove who's name broke in the UK when we licensed 'I'm Touched ' to Slip-N-Slide. I like to play at the clubs where they trust that you know the crowd well enough to play a longer set of three or four hours, but the most satisfying thing for me has to produce artists I always loved. I worked really hard last year on my debut album, it was all worth it though! All the months of hard work in the studio culminated last October with the eventual release of my very first LP off my own Catch 22 imprint, My True Colors. Billboard Magazine declared it, 'Essential,' while Muzik described it as 'Sheer unadulterated pleasure.' Its great to get comments like that, it really gets me going! My first single, 'It's Easy', released from this album, was a big hit. I collaborated on it with the Rhythm Masters and it reached number three in the DJ Hype Charts and was licensed to Azuli for worldwide distribution. 'You' is another slamming track from the album and was remixed by Roger Sanchez for the twelve-inch release. After that the album was licensed to Japan's YPF which also featured some of my earlier work. Its good to get feedback from peers and peeps who've listened to my music. I am interested in all aspects of house music communication, that's the power of music.

The success of My True Colors launched me into the so-called global dance music scene; the album was one of the proudest moments of my life - the fruits of a lot of hard work. I went on to play out all over the place. Barcelona is a place I instantly fell in love with; the crowd at the distinguished Torres de Avillas was excellent. So good in fact, I soon started a Friday night residency at the Barcelona hot spot, adding to my existing residencies at GBH in New York and Club One in Dallas. I also embarked on some unexplored lands in last year, from Oslo's infamous Jazid to Tel Aviv's celebrated club Lemon. They keep asking me back, which says something, and it ain't 'cos I keep nickin the needles! I got invited back at Singapore's ''mall of sound,'' Club Zouk, back at Ibiza's mega-club Pacha, back at Belfast's Mabella Milk, back at Madrid's Deep, and back at UK's most notorious Ministry of Sound. I also love to play To The Manor Born and Bed in the UK - there are so many places! In North America too I've span at some world-renowned venues such as Sona in Montreal, Release in San Francisco, and Motor in Detroit. My personal favorite DJs are from these places; they are unknown residents at the moment, but who knows...there's DJ Minx from Detroit, DJ Lefleche from Montreal and DJ Oona from New Mexico. Watch out for them, its just a matter of time until they dominate the world.

If I must categorize myself, I play across the board, with elements of garage, disco, Latin and harder house to give crowds a soulful yet exhilarating experience. My touring schedule is still kinda hectic, but I've found time for even more missions. I became the buzz chart editor and record reviewer for Mixer Magazine, the biggest dance mag in North America. My work has finally appeared in Movies. 'Here Comes The Morning' a collaborative writing I was involved in got featured in Robert De Nero's film 'The Score'. I reunited with Jeremy Sylvester as X Factor 7 to release That's the Way Love Goes, a crowd favorite that was licensed to Italy's Sound For It. I also completed remixes for Jim Shaft Ryan's Happy Days on Concept Music, the Love Tattoos' Bass Has Got Me Movin on Hustle Records (which is now nominated for a grammy), and Samantha Mumbas' Always Come Back to Your Love on Polydor Records that went number 3 in the national charts in the UK. I even started another record label, Nympho Sounds, debuting with the Street Preacherz release 'ILL Conceptz', a collaborative effort with Steve Mac from the Rhythm Masters. 'Ill Conceptz' was very successful in 2001 as it appeared on mixed album CDs from John Aquaviva, Richard Humpty Vission, DJ Dan, and Bad Boy Bill. The track was also successful in France after Nympho Soundz licensed the record to Bio records in the same territory. Nympho Soundz continues to be a strong imprint for me as the labels second release by the Frost Project appeared on Steve Lawlers' 'Dark Drums' CD and Robbie Rivera's Beat Masterz effort has been his best in a while.

Comment: I don't like this sound at all. I can't help thinking of it as pop house. You know, sorta like that mainstream trance stuff but house. WAY too much latin too! Ugh!
