Biography of Aponaut

APONAUT have been bringing the Toronto scene their energetic hard acid trance for over 3 years. Previously known as “The Alliance” (1995-2000), these two pioneers of the city’s live trance acts have continued to slam out tracks that are sure to grab you by the throat and kick your ass onto the dance floor.

TARL ARMES got his first synthesizer at the age of 17 – a Roland SH-101. At 18, he began his music career by joining a Depeche Mode cover band. Just one year later, he began working for Quality Records in Toronto, where he gained experience doing both remixes and his own original music. Soon after he joined Quality, he formed “Positronic Brain” – his first all-original music project. He had his first hit with a track called Mystify, which stayed on the charts for 12 weeks, and earned Tarl a Juno nomination. Eventually Tarl left Quality (which later folded) and became known as “The Alliance”. In 1996 Tarl signed with UK hard-trance legend, M-Zone, on TYT Records (a subdivision of his well-known UK44 Records). After numerous releases on TYT/UK44, Tarl was joined by Alex, and they eventually re-named themselves Aponaut.

ALEX BECKETT has been writing music and performing live at raves since the summer of 1993. Originally involved in a duo which went by the name of “Subconscious”, he started off writing jungle, drum & bass, and hardcore. He eventually fell in love with the sounds of trance, and with 10 years of classical piano training, the transition seemed a natural one. After meeting Tarl at a 1997 Subconscious show, he eventually joined The Alliance in 1998, and the two have been producing music together ever since. Alex has also recently released solo work on Warning Records UK, under the name XLS.

Aponaut is made up of 2 members: Tarl Armes and Alex Beckett. Since starting in the fall of 2000, they’ve played alongside some of the top international talent in the world (Derb, Misjah & Tim, Accuface, Norman Freeman, Commander Tom, M-Zone, Mark EG, Chris Liberator...), at some of the best and craziest parties in Toronto, Montréal and Québec City. Their long list of credits includes New Years Eve 2001 – A Groove Oddessey, The Tao of Purple Heaven, Highwire, Outerspace Energy (Montréal), Versus 3 (Québec City), K-Haus (Montréal) and every World Electronic Music Festival to date! In addition to these, they have frequently played live at weekly club events throughout the Toronto area, including Club Space, the Drop Zone, Ascension, and Devotion. With new tracks and remixes coming out on Audiocode Records (Germany) as well as a history of influential releases (under various names) on UK44, TYT, and Warning records, these two are set to make a major impact on the Hard Trance world! Their wicked blend of massive synths and ripping acid always keeps the dancefloor packed and moving! Check out the audio section of the site and you’ll see why!
