Biography of Mixmaster Mike

Mix Master Mike had developed a dedicated following long before he united with the Beastie Boys to create elements of Hello Nasty. Mike had proved himself to be a DMC World Champion with his turntablist crew Invisibl Skratch Piklz. And while with ISP, MMM released several mix tapes and video tapes which showcase his wrists of fury.

Taking the role of the DJ to the next level, Mix Master Mike makes his turntables function as instruments on stage. It did not take long for people to realize that they were seeing something special when MMM was on tour. During the opening minutes of the 1998 Beastie Boys concerts, Mike made mouths drop open as he cut up Rush's 'Tom Sawyer' night after night. This routine had been done previously by fellow ISP member DJ Q-bert on his album.

Comment: Good set, not the best quality, constant crowd noise spoilt it a bit, but still good.

Comment: Whew!!! This is a great set. I'm normally a deep househead but when it comes to a few certain DJs I really get into this style and technique and Mike is at the top of his game with this one. I wish the quality were slightly better but what I really love about this set is the old school blended with the new. Mike always brings it and as he says so eloquently in the intro - Let's start this shit up!!! :-D

Comment: Dope mix. As always Mike kills it in the skills department, interesting selection of tracks with some more commercial drops in there, but he tears them apart. Some Q-bert style alien scratching too which adds another element to his party styleee. If you appreciate a good piece of turntablism, this is a great example of what he is capable of. 8-)

Comment: Decent set, not as good as other sets of his I've heard and witnessed. a few mistakes but MMM can laugh at himself about it. quality was decent, just a little crowd noise coming thru. overall a good set with a bunch of classic breaks and hip-hop.

Comment: The Serial Wax Killer strikes again. The amazing thing is that this is a live recording. The amount of records he goes through at this pace with minimal mistakes, is just phenomenal. What most don't realise is that this type of turntablism involves crowd feedback and participation, and is more of a showcase rather than a conventional DJ set. MMM absorbs all that to go berzerk on the decks and improv on his scratching, hence the crowd noise. It's part of the atmosphere, which adds to a rockin' party showcase.

Comment: this is a brief mix of mixmaster mike showing some home town love in san francisco. the energy he is able to maintain from the start is incredible. the sound is decent, but the quality mixing, cutting, and track selection really shine here.

Comment: Well, I know what time it is. And I know this because MMM's MC reminded me a little too much through the early part of this mix.

Seriously though, this is my first download and I can't imagine others being any better. I'd agree with the poster above that it is a great mix of old and new. The scratching...I wish I could do 1/8 of the things Mike does. If you're down with hip-hop, you'll love this. Audio quality was totally acceptable to me.
