Biography of Charley Ten
From the early age of a few months in the womb, Charley Ten was constantly exposed to many different musical genres through the uterine wall by his professional musician father, and psychologist mother. Then while only in his second day of life, as his Grandmother was holding him and gently humming a song, he distinctly began to hum the tune back to her in response. These things surely set the tone for the rest of his upbringing in the 80's where there was a constant influx of new music coming from either his father's playing of classical or ragtime on the piano, folk and rock-n-roll on his guitar, or his mother's obsession with contemporary synth-pop and current dance music.
Charley began playing the acoustic guitar at the age of 8, which he kept up through his adolescence with the influences of: The Cure's harmonic melodies, The Smashing Pumpkins' complex musical arrangements, Tool's dark marriage of minimilistic auditory composition and visual art, and Bj's delightfully juxtaposed musical components.
Charley's love for electronic music became firmly rooted upon his discovery of the Aphex Twin's 'I Care Because You Do' in 1995 and Josh Wink's 'Left above the Clouds' in 1996. These albums opened the doors to a completely different musical world through which he passed and never returned. Attending his first raves in 1997, Charley was again introduced to a new form of musical conveyance from which he has yet to recover, the DJ Set.
He began playing records and learning to beat-match in the summer of 2000. As more years of unflinching dedication to the craft and the inclination to look towards new technology with a gleam in his eye passed, Charley assumed even more control over his DJ sets by incorporating a Final Scratch system and a C-Loops sampler into his setup. These tools further enabled him to perform personalized re-edits of his favorite tracks and the flexibility to impulsively remix songs whilst live in the mix.
To comprehend the unique sound of Charley Ten's sets one would have to imagine funky and deep tech house tracks with an emphasis on lush symphonic combinations, infectious baselines, and a fresh approach to production with inspiration from electro and acid house sounds of the 80s.
