Biography of Mark Farina

Making a name for himself mainly as a DJ, Mark Farina has had a large hand in the building of San Francisco's house music scene. Originally from Chicago, Farina is in the same generation of Chicago house music legends Derrick Carter and Cajmere. Mostly associated with the Mushroom Jazz series of releases, Farina is known for his down-tempo but dancefloor-friendly style of mixing jazz, house, and hip-hop.

Farina started DJing at the age of 15 in his hometown of Chicago. The city's large hand in the creation of house music had a strong influence on Farina and acted as a large source of inspiration for his DJing. At Northwestern University's radio station, WNUR, Farina and his airwaves partner Derrick Carter produced a Friday night radio show for two years. During this time, Farina released Mood as part of the trio Symbols and Instruments.

Shortly after his time at Northwestern University, Farina relocated to San Francisco. Using his musical influences, Farina made a mix tape of down-tempo house tunes called Mushroom Jazz. Soon after, the album's title spawned a type of sound and grew popular due in part to Farina's weekly residency at a local club called Jazid Up. The local notoriety of the mix tape eventually resulted in a CD of the same name on Om Records in October of 1996 and led to a global tour, which Farina headlined. In 1996, he also produced another continuous-mix CD, Seasons One, on Domestic Records. The second installation in his original series, Mushroom Jazz, Vol. 2, was released in 1998, once again resulting in another promotional tour lead by the now seasoned DJ. Farina released two more mix CDs in 1998, United DJs of America, Vol. 9 (Moonshine) and Imperial Dub, Vol. 1 (Studio !K7). After the string of mix CDs, Farina released an original work in 1998, 'Midnight Calling.' The track went virtually unnoticed due to the fact that Farina's mix CDs and DJing appearances were receiving most of the promotional attention. In 1999, the first in a series of CDs by Om Records meant to highlight San Francisco DJs, debuted with Farina. The CD showcased Farina's style of mixing jazzy down-tempo and disco vocal-oriented tracks. The CD was also released as a triple-vinyl pack containing, in their entirety, all the songs Farina used for the CD. In 2001, Farina continued with the Mushroom Jazz series, releasing the much-awaited third installment.

Comment: This is a perfectly good example of a new-age farina mix. Big mark laces in those trademark hip hop dubs with an abundance of fresh, clean house tracks. This is where house music is headed my friends..... A must download for all Farina Fans!!!!!!!!!

Comment: This is another good mix by Mark Farina, although I think the acappella of Kanye West and Nas played over the house beat has been overused. I heard the same bit in his Focus set mixed over another house track. Nonetheless, this is a great mix and there are some really good house tunes!

Comment: Farina mixes with the best. Whilst his track selection is of the expected quality the sound recording verges on disgusting. If you like hearing whoo hoos go to your local pub. For real Farina quality buy fabric 40.

Comment: Good mix but recorded with a mic and not through the mixer so we hear people talking and commenting as it's playing. I would definitely have ranked it higher with a better recording which is too bad but it's good set though.

Comment: This set has a lot of great tracks/beats but I was really sad about the sound and how they had the mic volume up too loud so you can hear some girls talking non-stop. I do not mind the mics in live sets when it is turned to a low volume because it makes me feel like I am at the show and it does not mess up the sound of the beats/bass. But I would agree with Pas08 and would have ranked this set much higher if the audio quality was much better.

My wife and I have always liked Farina and seeing him live is worth every $$$ for both sets he plays. I have seen Farina live since his early days in the 90s and never get sick of his style.

Comment: Solid Farina live set. A little sleepy at the start. Though comes thru with that classic Farina bounce in the end. Probably a lot of tracks that were handed to him during the week were played for the first time. This can sometimes contribute to live sets not being as impressive as you expect. Especially during the WMC... Still, its tight. Peep it out... sick last track.

Comment: This is a fun set. Good music and a good vibe. The problem is you hear the crowd the whole time. It was a roof top party but it sounds like everyone was just hanging out in front of the tables. It is really annoying unless you want to feel like you were at the party. If you listen you can hear the conversations of the people. Again, over all good mix, just wish i could listen to it with out all the background noise.

Comment: Not one of Mark's epic sets, but a good set overall. It's classic Farina style weaving through deep and funky house tunes with some hip hop acappellas for the crowd. Not a big fan of the Kanye one, but you could tell the crowd was feelin' it. I Didn't really enjoy listening to the guy talking about the "cool tattoo," but does give you that "live" feel for those of us not in attendance that night. Overall, I think the mix was good and the mixing seemed pretty tight. It's definitely worth a listen.

Comment: I loved the tracks but what really was annoying is the fact that you can hear people talking and shouting. It just ruined it for me.

If I wanted to hear people shout I'd go to a club or something.

The beginning was a little bit boring and made me wait for the good part.

Comment: the actual quality of the tunes is excellent, however the general background noise of punters chatting and shouting is downright annoying...you can literally hear individual people speaking at times :o/

Comment: S0 I put this set on to run on a hot day...I was feeling lazy and started my run...by first two songs I felt like I was running with a cool breeze..this set is superb from top to bottom...reminds me of some of his older sets back in the 90's...super funky tracks laced with some sweet deep house and that usual Farina style...a must download for all househeads
