The band was established in 1982 by cEvin Key (original name: Kevin Crompton), who was dreaming about more experimental sounding as the drummer of a pop band called Images in Vogue. Later he met Nivek Ogre (original name: Kevin Ogilvie), the latter frontman of the band. They were interested in similar things: both were horror-movie fans and looked for similar directions in electronic music. cEvin defined his music resulted of experiments with sounds and instruments as 'soundsculpture'. They recorded their first casette Back and Forth in 1984. It was published in private edition and their first EP Remission could be published in the same year due to a lucky coincidence when one of cEvin's friends founded his record company called Nettwerk.
They released their first full length album Bites in 1985. At the beginning, a keyboardist named Wilhelm Schroeder played in the band, but the amateur keyboardist has never became the full member of Skinny Puppy. Wilhelm decided to leave the band during the making of the record Mind: The Perpetual Intercourse (1986). At this time, Dwayne Rudolph Goettel joined the band, who was an experienced keyboardist and shortly became a determining element of the band. This line up with producer Dave 'Rave' Ogilvie released such groundbreaking records as Cleanse Fold And Manipulate (1987), VIVIsectVI (1988), Rabies (1989), Too Dark Park (1990) and Last Rights (1992). In-between 1986 and 1992 Skinny Puppy toured North America 6 times (1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1990, 1992) and Europe 3 times (1986, 1987, 1988).
In 1993, they contracted with a new record company, American Recordings, for the purpose of creating the most outstanding album of their carreer. Unfortunately, the change brought unexpected affairs. Despite the positive signs at the beginning, they could not agree with the record company and the conflicts in the band were also sharpened. On the top of these events, D.R. Goettel died in heroin overdose in 1995, so the album published in 1996, titled The Process had to be finished without him. The complications around the making of the album and Dwayne's tragical death resulted the break up (temporary) of the band. Later, the two founder members were working on different projects.
In 2000, thanks to German concert-organizers' obsession, cEvin and Ogre joined again just for one concert in Dresden. The memorable event is documented on the live album Doomsday. Already at that time, news have taken wings about a new album, and finally in 2004, the doubtfulness was over: eight years after the crash in the band's life, The Greater Wrong of the Right was published. Also, an extensive world tour followed the new album. Kraftwerk, Throbbing Gristle or The Legendary Pink Dots are usually mentioned as the most influential bands of Skinny Puppy's music. They collaborated with the latter two bands and they worked together with more other bands (e.g. Ministry, Revolting Cocks, KMFDM, Pigface).
The members participated in many other projects besides Skinny Puppy: aDuck (Dwayne), Download (cEvin, Dwayne, Philth, Mark Spybey), Cyberaktif (cEvin, Dwayne, Bill Leeb), Doubting Thomas (cEvin, Dwayne), Hilt (cEvin, Dwayne, Al Nelson, Rave, Ryan Moore), ohGr (Ogre, Mark Walk), Rx (Ogre, Martin Atkins), PletEAU (Philth, cEvin, Anthony Valcic), The Tear Garden (Skinny Puppy and Legendary Pink Dots).
