Adam Marshall is one of the leaders of Canada’s growing electronic music community. His raw house groove and minimal techno roots combine to create a future style of soul. In both live sets and DJ performances, Adam has the ability to explore a full spectrum of music; from the deepest techno-funk to the most jacking house.
Growing up in Toronto, Adam was witness to the powerful mid-90’s Detroit techno - driving down to the Motor City frequently to experience the crazy parties and visit places like Underground Resistance and Record Time. Wanting to bring a similar sound - unconstrained by genres like “techno” and “house” music - to Toronto, Adam worked closely with other artists such as Mike Shannon, Jeff Milligan, and Jeremy P. Caulfield to produce events that broke new ground and showcased the up-and-coming Canadian sound.
DJ’s like Robert Hood, Richie Hawtin, Chez Damier, Slam, DJ Hell, Marco Carola, DJ Traxx, Ron Trent, Moodyman and Theo Parrish. This lasted for over 4 years and allowed Adam to develop his “sound” in the confines of an intimate club with a killer soundsystem. His well-developed mixture of techno and house was well received, and Adam quickly found himself DJing almost every weekend at amazing parties and events all over North America.
During this time, he also worked as the lead buyer at Speed Records; then Toronto’s most well-known import vinyl record store.
Though touring frequently, he found time to concentrate on his own production work and in late ‘99 released his first vinyl recording. Getting more and more into his studio and his own production work, Adam took a break from his consistent DJ schedule and changed his focus to starting a label of his own. Killer Recordings was born and the label released a set of strong EP’s from Jake Fairley, Matt Thibadeau, and himself. Killer operated until 2004, at which point Adam changed the name of the label to New Kanada and the sound became much more “minimal”. New Kanada has released tracks by Mike Shannon, J. Hunsberger, Jeremy P. Caulfield, Hearthrob, and Mood Edit.
Currently, , Adam is the main resident at Toronto’s premier underground club Crosstown, playing weekly with guests such as Francois K., Derrick May and Larry Heard. He continues to push the boundaries of what “techno” is in his current production work, while regularily touring throughout North and South America, Europe and Asia.
