Biography of Storm

Though their introduction of Goldie to drum & bass through Fabio & Grooverider's legendary Rage night has now become part of drum & bass folklore, little is actually known of Kemi & Storm other than their early fascination with DJing and unadulterated love of the music.

Rarely playing out without the other, Kemi explains their relationship when DJing: 'It always sounds odd to us when people talk about our style. The only way to describe it is what we call the rough with the smooth. Perhaps as there are two inputs and plains of thought working within our set the results can be quite unexpected.'

Storm continues: 'Though we share one set of records, we have our own selection within that so we'd never play the same track. If there is a Kemi & Storm sound it must come from the original roots of drum & bass. From listening to Fabio & Groove in 1990 when this music was being thrown together and it was all so new and exciting. As a result, we try to cover everything within our sets and trying to cram it all in within one hour can make it very full-on.'

Something you can now experience at home as they recently mixed the latest in Studio K7's well-respected 'DJ Kicks' compilation series. Storm explains the difficulties in selecting records for a set that's being committed to CD: 'It was a different thing entirely because of licensing. Every time we thought we had the tracks pinned down, things changed - to the point that we weren't really sure what we were dealing with until the last minute. We've tried to show a few different styles by choosing different kinds of producers - hopefully we've encompassed those sounds.'

Though the pair have steered clear of recording, a single track carries their name. 'Signature' on the seventh part of Reinforced's 'Enforcers' series says a lot about their thoughts of the music. Engineered by 4 Hero's Dego, the track rattles through a series of styles, switching direction at virtually every break while vocal-enhanced synth sections crash past abrasive null lines and vast Juno pads. Kemi explains how 'Signature' came about: 'At that time there was quite a lot of pressure on DJs to produce and we felt it might help us get further, faster. Basically Reinforced had some spare studio time and they kindly asked us if we wanted to make a track. We had some ideas, though didn't have a clue about how to put a track together so Dego engineered it for us and we just took on the producing side.'

Storm elaborates further: 'There have been moments since when we've felt like making more, but we'd want to engineer the music ourselves and explore exactly what sounds can do and what the equipment is capable of. Perhaps we'll buy some equipment and start getting things together, though I would expect that people would want us to come with something so amazing that there would be a lot of pressure on us and, at the moment, we're not ready for that kind of pressure. We're both still so excited by drum & bass and feel there's so much there that we're happy doing what we're doing.'

When Goldie established Metalheadz in 1994, he brought Kemi & Storm along with him to help manage the label. Storm explains what made the imprint so unique: 'It was Goldie's decision as to which artists came to the label, and the people he wanted were those who he felt had turned him on to the music. I feel Metalheadz set a lot of standards within drum & bass and it did that through giving artists the freedom and opportunity to really lay down how they felt the next stage of this music would be. Although people have bracketed it as a dark label, there aren't many back catalogues as broad as Metalheadz. Those artists were the very best at what they did, people were so happy to be involved with this cutting edge label and you never had any doubt of any track which came through the door as you knew that the artists would be presenting their best work.'

Though they still represent Metalheadz through DJing, they handed over the management of the label a couple of years ago. 'It was hard to leave as we made it our life for two and a half years and felt we had played a part in something really special but we became so busy that we could no longer do both,' says Kemi.

Storm adds: 'We've thought about establishing our label and bringing through some new artists but we are both well aware of what running a label entails. It's such a hard thing to do properly we don't think we have the time at the moment to do it justice.'

As to the strength of the scene in '99, both are positive, although as Kemi explains she feels the music is again in a transitional phase: 'The speed at which drum & bass moves is something which has kept us attracted to the music. I think we're at a morphing stage where people are trying all kinds of new things again. The music is so varied and is going backwards, forwards and inside out, but as soon as people pick up on where it is, off we all go in that direction and that will be the next lick.'

Storm surmises their success: 'We've always felt that a lot of things have happened for us at the right time. The last couple of years have been great in that we've never seen such success. We really will play anywhere and are prepared to give everything a go - it's just our life and we totally love it.'
