Biography of Dan Berkson
Dan Berkson & James What are a newly formed London based production and live performance duo. Both Dan and James have been playing music, producing, and DJing in their own separate projects up to now, but have recently teamed up in an attempt to create their own blend of electronic house music. Dan grew up playing keyboards, and was performing six nights a week in his hometown of Chicago by the age of 16. He entered the New England Conservatory of Music in 1993 and quickly immersed himself in the worlds of jazz, funk and soul. While at NEC, he studied with such jazz greats as Danilo Perez, Cecil Mcbee and George Russell. As his interests turned more to house, dub and electronic music, he went to London to study production and to be able to go to Fabric whenever he pleased! Since then, Dan has been releasing records on many labels including Mood Music, Movim, Exun, and Gourmet Recorings and djing in the US and Europe. His latest EP will be released on Crosstown Rebels in the coming months. James What, originating from Germany, Scotland and Guatemala and brought up in southern France moved to London in 1999 to study music and sound engineering at London College of Music and SAE. Since then, he has been involved in a motley of music projects ranging from electronica to world music and currently releases records under his two projects names, James What and Sprayfonk. James What made his first appearances with productions on Treibstoff and Einmalein’s Musik and was selected to take part in the Red Bull Music Academy 2005 held in Seattle. Dan Berkson & James What’s debut EP together on Poker Flat, “The Dig” will be followed by more productions and they are now putting together a unique live PA featuring their own tracks mixed and reworked on laptops along with live synths.

Biography of James What
James What is a musician, producer and DJ living in London, UK and originates from Germany, Scotland and Guatemala. Brought up in the south of France, James discovered his passion for music at an early age through playing guitar and percussion. At 15, having won a battle of the bands competition in France he moved to London to study music performance, and later sound engineering and business. Since then he has been experimenting with the performance and production of all kinds of music ranging from world music to electronica.
Nowadays, pursuing his passion for electronic music, James works under various aliases and has been releasing his music on labels such as Poker Flat, Treibstoff and Einamaleins Musik. In 2005, after producing and co-writing the A sides of the first two Italoboyz records, James teamed up with Dan Berkson (Gourmet/Moodmusic) to perform and produce together as they shared a similar background in music performance. Their debut EP together on Poker Flat, 'The Dig' has been a big success and was followed by a two tracker on Sounderground Records. Their most recent EP 'Cantina' just came out on Poker Flat.
James also writes music for the TV and broadcast industry and in 2005, was selected for the Red Bull Music Academy held in Seattle. Now, James is focusing on producing more music while pursuing other music and business projects and performs his live sets around the world with Dan Berkson.
