Biography of John Selway
From the desk of John Selway:
Lately I'm getting questions from friends, associates, promoters... What are you up to now? What music are you doing? What style are your DJ sets?
Someone told me recently, it's hard to define what I do. For all the years I've been working I've produced music of many styles and played DJ sets from ambient to groovy minimal to italo disco and old school house to electro and all styles of techno from deepest to hardest. And I've enjoyed it all. But I can see that it's difficult to put a name on my style, or find some overall easy to promote concept. A promoter might ask, 'where does Selway fit in?'
As a DJ, I've begun to move away from the harder edge of techno. Currently my sets consist of energetic, musical minimal/electro techno. My favorite times are when I can start on the deeper side and then build up to the crazier party tracks - but avoiding the very repetitive loop-base banging techno I've played sometimes in the past. In addition, I'm also enjoying sets where I play classic italo disco, acid house and other old-school dance stuff.
As a producer, I continue to be eclectic - having different side projects and collaborations. But for my solo material I am concentrating on the same kind of music I play in my DJ sets. I will focus mostly on my own labels, CSM and Memory Boy. CSM reflects my deeper side, featuring minimal techno and house material. Memory Boy is an outlet for the electro, disco, retro flavored stuff.
For anyone interested in my harder side - I will still occasionally pull out some of the full-on material - mostly only with any future gigs when I team up again with my long-time techno production partner Christian Smith.
