Biography of DJ Remedy

Since being forced to join the middle school band and switch from guitar to drums, rhythm has always been in John’s life. It just so happens that six years later, John was unable to bring his drum set along to college in Madison, WI. It was about this time that he decided he needed rhythm in his life once again. It only took one session of “chillin” with his brother that he was exposed to Mark Farina’s “Mushroom Jazz 3”. It all took off from there.

After rummaging through his brother’s extensive electronic music collection in 2002 and listening to any downtempo he could get his hands on, he came across Kaskade’s “Sounds of OM 3”. What he proceeded to hear changed his life as a DJ forever. Hearing the CD player switch to track 8: Johnny Fiasco’s Remix of “Lovely”, a popular Soulstice song on OM Records, John heard his calling to spin house music. One year and $1000 later, John began his career as a DJ.

Madison, WI was a perfect setting for John being exposed to a revitalization of electronic music. With a known history of raves and warehouse parties, and pioneering DJ’s such as Nick Nice and Mike Carlson, there was much growth for John to prosper as a House DJ.

Meeting fellow student and friend Hongxu Liu aka “Dj Shu” set the wheels in motion for a Madison DJ experience for John. Liu started the Electronic Music Coalition (EMC), a student organization geared towards the advancement of electronic music in Madison. From this, John was exposed to electronic music events and started meeting and started tagging with Hongxu on a regular basis.

Going under the alias, “Remedy”, John and Hongxu started the monthly event, “Pulse” at local Madison bar and lounge, Crave in late March. After packing the joint two times over and jacking the crowd till 3 in the morning, more opportunities to spin came about. Shortly after “Pulse”, Remedy filled in for local Madison DJ’s Harsh and Donnie Vendetta at Club Frida’s Thursday night party, “Intensity.” After tripling the normal crowd on a Thursday, there was much ahead for the up and coming house DJ.

Moving to Chicago to pursue other career opportunities in the summer of 2006, Remedy has been pumping out mixes at a feverish rate. The funky jacking sound that Remedy pounds out the speaker nowadays can be attributed to seeing a Chicago based duo, The Sound Republic, at an EMC event in 2005. John knew there was something special in this sound. So if you tune into any of Remedy’s latest mixes, this new school house sound of funky jacking bleeps and blops is what you’ll hear. Remedy is trying his best to pursue his career as a DJ. Shopping on a regular basis at Chicago’s Gramaphone Records and seeing all the acts he possibly can at venues such as Smartbar and Moonshine, Remedy can be found in Chicago for many years to come. Welcoming opportunities to play in the Chicago area, Remedy asks for your feedback and comments on any of his mixes. As always, JACK CHICAGO!
