Biography of Cassius
Cassius comprises two 31-year-old Parisians, Boombass and Phillipe Zdar, who have also recorded as La Funk Mob on James Lavelle's Mo' Wax Records label. Zdar was one of France's most respected DJs, famous for his sets at 'Respect' in Paris as well as 'Basement Jaxx' and 'Scaramanga' in south London. Boombass grew up in Paris where his father was a successful record producer, so it was a natural step for him into the music business. By 1991, he had become a producer and was working on MC Solaar's first album.
Zdar grew up in the Alps but met Boombass in 1988 after landing a job assisting Boombass' father. Sharing interests in hip-hop, American movies and fashion, they became friends and eventually a production team. They produced three highly successful albums for MC Solaar and developed the proto-trip-hop sound of La Funk Mob. In 1992, Zdar discovered house music and techno and, with DJ Etienne De Cr‚cy, began recording under the Motorbass moniker, including 1996's Pansoul, a landmark in the development of French house. Zdar persuaded Boombass to make a house record and the result ? 'Foxy Lady' released under the name L'Homme Qui Valait Trois Millards ('The Six Million Dollar Man') was the first indication of the coming wave of funky French disco. It became a classic single, played by many UK DJs. 1999 was recorded in three weeks during the summer of 1998 and its influences include Daft Punk, DJ Sneak, Tuff Jam and Masters At Work. The infectious single 'Cassius 1999' was released in January 1999 and was an immediate critical and commercial success.
