Biography of Northern Lite

Hysteria in Tokyo, jam-packed clubs in Rio, London and Barcelona and a vivid headliner show in front of 3000 people in the Columbia Hall in Berlin – Northern Lite are defining a new genre in which Techno, Independent Rock and Electro music fuse together.

Having won 'Best Indie/ Electro Artist' at this years Dance Music Awards proves them right. They are not just exploring new musical ways, however. Together with artist friends they have developed a gripping concept where music merges with visual effects. Their stage visuals and art work excite clubbers, concert-goers and record sellers worldwide.

The history of Northern Lite started at the end of the nineties. Whilst many young, creative people, following the call of colourful magazines, were drawn to the melting pots of the big cities, Andreas (vocals) and Sebastian – having met in provincial Erfurt - saw no reason to follow this general mood. However, no record label was yet interested in their soon to be recorded tracks. So they set up their own.

1st Decade Records became a lucky break for both musicians and with its first compilation the label invented a new genre: Neopop. They signed new artists, quickly paving the way for a new style and sold more than 100.000 records. You evidently don’t need to be a big corporation to be successful.

After numerous 12inch publications the music industry started taking notice of 1st Decade Records. In 2003 the CD-EP 'Treat me better' was released by Warner Music. Because of Warner’s internal restructuring however, the band decided to release their upcoming album “Reach the Sun” 2004 on their own. Now, at the very latest, it becomes clear that to the dark, melodic sound, which marked Northern Lite’s first years, the added energetic guitars created their very own distinctive sound.

It’s not surprising then that the band is known internationally today. Whether it’s Budapest, Madrid or Paris –a lot of interest is shown abroad in Erfurt’s musical export. John Peel has played Northern Lite tracks in his broadcasts. Concert performances at the Wire Festival in Japan, at the Spanish Benicassim, but also at the Love Parade, Sonne Mond Sterne or at Nature One Northern Lite inspire thousands of music lovers.

At the beginning of 2005 the single 'Go with the flow' was released – a cover version of a Queens of the Stone Age song. It gave a first taste of the new album showing that Northern Lite allows electronic rock to evolve ever more.

The second LP „Temper“ is released on 9th of May. The wide range of tracks taking influences from dance floor to new wave make the album fun to listen to in clubs and on the car stereo alike. The tight BPM-borders of electronic music are broken and the singing voice of Andreas Kubat has more emphasis. “Temper” carries on with the typical Northern Lite theme of merging electronic and alternative music but with a more multifaceted and defined sound.

Northern Lite’s stage show too goes far beyond of what you would dare to expect from an Indie act. Whilst panoramic pictures were flashed at the audience for “Reach the Sun” Kreativschmiede '18. Oktober' together with Carsten Weitzmann got rid off all conventional techno- and rock bands stage craft: For the new Northern Lite show you will see dynamic paintings on the stage of concert halls and clubs.

If 1st Decade Records and Northern Lite continue to disregard those convenient restrictions we can certainly look forward to exciting years to come here in the first decade of this century.
