Biography of Greg Abesamis

Name: Greg Abesamis
AKA: Ops Monkey
Nationality: Canadian

I started DJ'ing in 1990. In my formative years I played Hip-Hop, R&B & Dance pop. I never got to a high level of skill on the Urban side. I can't really do any of the crazy turntable tricks or anything like that. But I did learn the basics such as beat matching, counting bars & all that good stuff. Until 2000 I honed my skills on those kinds of music. Then I discovered House. I decided to drop what I was doing & find my sound within that genre.

I ended up gravitating towards U.S. Garage, Funky & Deep House. But mostly U.S. Garage. Given the kind of music I was playing before it was a natural move. I've been playing those sub-genres of House ever since.

I tend to use a lot of vocal tracks. Most instrumental songs bore me unless they have a really good groove. More recently I've been trying to incorporate a bit of the dance pop back into my sets. Mostly in the form of J-Pop.

In addition to the previously mentioned genres, I also play Hard House (or Hard Dance or whatever name it is these days) & Trance. But not very often.

This may come as surprise to everyone. I have only played in a club once. Yes, once. That was back in 2004. I haven't stepped foot in one (to work) since then.
