Biography of Shitmat

Shitmat is the performing name of Henry Collins, a breakcore artist from Brighton. His music is largely based around the Amen break, Gabber, Plunderphonics, jungle and drum 'n' bass.

His music, sometimes referred to as 'Mashcore', is known for the humorous use of samples atypical of 'serious' Drum and bass artists and deliberate use of clichés. 'Agricultural Ardcore' from Full English Breakfest Vol.5 is based around the theme tune to the UK radio soap opera The Archers. The KillaBabylonKutz EP is an album playing on clichés within the ragga-jungle scene, in which every single track is based on the same ragga sample. The Lesser Spotted Burberry EP is a tongue-in-cheek play on the UK's Chav subculture and makes references to brands such as Burberry and Argos that are often associated with it. During live performances, Shitmat himself often performs wearing a Burberry Baseball Cap, further reinforcing the parody.

Like other similar Breakcore acts, Shitmat is something of a crossover artist with people who are not normally associated with Drum and Bass and other genres of Dance Music, such as Heavy Metal.

Comment: Absolutely Awesome! Doubt I'll find a better set on here. Drill n bass, oldskool, gabba, happy hardcore, jungle, noise, showtunes, harmonica, ace of bass, aled jones and wicked comedy MCing from the man like shitmat :-) :-) :-)

Comment: Mentalist mashed up hardcore stuff. Silly and stupendous with its samples ('all that she wants', 'lets hear it for the boys', 'walking in the air') and dog scaring noise. A good quality recording and even better set. Download it!

Comment: Shitmat produces some amazing tunes and usually puts on quite a good live show. However, this is NOT A GOOD EXAMPLE OF SHITMAT'S TALENT, or of a good mix set. The set is plagued by equipment breakdowns (the sound cuts out completely at 40 minutes and when it comes back a bit later it is quite distorted and glitchy). Most of the tunes appear to be simply played straight out of his laptop, without any evidence of mixing, so if you own the tunes already this won't provide you with anything new. His banter between songs is rubbish, not funny (which is unusual for Shitmat as he is usually hillarious). He does play an amusing harmonica solo, but only because his laptop needs time to reboot, which I don't feel is particularly professional. I expected more from Shitmat; the tunes are good but I can listen to them on record in my bedroom. A live show should be unique and interesting and I don't think this mix quite hits the mark.

Comment: Just what the contemporary zeitgeist cries out for.A terrific slap-happy mishmosh. Some technical snags in second half but Shitmat prevails for glorious outcome.(I think maybe all the Vienna Shitmats are the same recording).
