DJ Tamerax (AKA: Corey Cutting) has been shaking things in a big way lately in the Ottawa/Montreal underground scene. Playing his thundering selection of the darker side of hard trance, Tamerax has been wreaking havoc on dance floors all over Ottawa for a little over a year and half, and has been receiving tremendous positive feedback. Why? Some say it’s his great track selection and smooth mixing skills for just the right moment. Having a good ear for songs isn’t a surprise: he was radio disk jockey at the local radio station when he was a tender 16 year old. Others say it’s because he gets so into the music that he is usually dancing harder behind the decks than most people in front of them. Whether it’s just dancing, jumping around, pumping his fists or screaming, Tamerax truly knows how to work a crowd into the ground and yet leave them always wanting more. Maybe that’s why people ask him for his mixes (over 2000 copies have been given out or downloaded.) The next stage of Tamerax’s career is about to take off now that he’s just recently moved from Ottawa to Montreal, Quebec where he’s already played several parties and was received with the same crowd enthusiasm as in Ottawa. More recently, Tamerax has been getting gigs in Toronto, Hamilton and as far off as Vancouver.
Tamerax has only been playing publicly for less than 4 years, but already has been voted one of Ottawa’s most popular DJs in the Ottawa underground rave scene. There are two reasons why he’s gotten to where he is now: The first would have to be that he started off in the Ottawa scene as a promoter in 1999 and during that time, made a lot of friends and got to listen to a lot of amazing DJs who were an inspiration and showed him how to work the crowd. As he listened to what they played and how they reacted with the crowd, he took what they do and made it his own. Second, his amazing personality has had something to do with it, too. He loves music, loves to dance, and he won’t just smile, he’ll let them know that he’s feeling the music and the vibe from and through them. “The people are a great inspiration” he quotes. “I always make sure everyone has a copy of my mixes and that I have contact with all the promoters letting them know I’m available.” He really makes an effort to get to know what the people want and then tries his best to give it to them.
Other styles of music Tamerax plays in addition to hard trance would have to be Freeform/Trancecore sets. He’s always looking for something a little bit harder, yet keeps the trance elements he’s always loved. Sometime he’ll split his longer sets with half hard trance and then moves the other half into freeform. He’s been collecting more and more hardcore records and has a few gigs in the future doing hardcore sets. Over the years he has met so many amazing DJs and promoters who have inspired him, especially DJ S4. Tamerax has also always enjoyed listening to Yoji Biomehanika and, lately, the Uberdruck and Blutonium sound (Hard style) coming out of Germany.
