01glitch, as an artist, has his roots in minimal techno and IDM (both developed in the early 90's), and house (developed in the mid-80's) genres of music. Like many artists of the audible sub genres of the electronic music, 01glitch’s sound borders on multiple categories, blurring the lines between rudimentary techno and some of the newer, thinned out, 'click and pop' garage house that spills out of the abandoned, left over sub genres such as microhouse, glitch and minimal techno. To be more precise, the crisp yet watered down sounds of 01glitch deliver all the groovy sounds of backroom House Music while carrying a notable frequency that can only be truly explained by an understanding of the driving, repetitive nature of techno.
When considering the distinct and eclectic properties of 01glitch’s sound scapes, it goes without question that he grants the listener a similar version of the elementary eight-bit techno sound of the 80's heard in electroclash, upgraded to a hard-click, edgy sound refined for the modern techno audiophile. Simultaneously, 01glitch turns his head away from the full-on, room filling sounds of tech house, while maintaining a groovy progression that can only be associated with traditional House Music.
01glitch strips house music down to a more minimal and sparse aesthetic, in the same vein as tech house. However, unlike tech-house, which evolved from hard techno and house, creating a very loud, rave-oriented sound, 01glitch has developed his sound out of minimal techno and the glitch genres (and arguably tech-house itself), producing a more complex and detailed (though sparse) aesthetic. 01glitch likes to be thought of as a bridge between the minimal techno, glitch, and tech-house genres - his click-and-cut aesthetic smoothly mixing with minimal techno, while the more-dance-oriented sound, coming from his house and dub influences give him a greater accessibility.
Virtually all of 01glitch’s tracks employ a 4/4 time signature. However, the percussion he uses is closely linked to the “glitch” genre, from which his moniker is derived, it is rarely found outside of minimal techno and IDM, that often replaces the typical house kick drums and hi-hats (which infect virtually all styles of electronic dance) with clicks, microscopic thuds, and small bits of noise. Many upcoming artists are now beginning to experiment with different forms of sampling to achieve this same effect.
Sampling is integral to the sound of 01glitch, he is no longer a synthesizer based musician. Relying often on only extremely short ('micro') samples of the human voice, musical instruments, everyday noises and computer created wave patterns often arranging them to form very complex melodies. Vocals found in a mix by 01glitch are often very simplistic, nonsensical, and monotone in nature.
As 01glitch has produced music over time, the use of the computer to create has increased significantly. Perfect timing, repeats, and perfect symmetry within the music, all of which were at one time humanly impossible, are now possible through the use of computers. As a result, his music generally expresses a love for logic, patterning, and order. While the sound and means of production might seem postmodern, this is not a philosophy that 01glitch caries beyond his music.
Live performances are commonly played entirely on a laptop computer with MIDI controllers, using programs like Kinetic 2 or patcher based DSP software such as Max/MSP and Pure Data. The amount of pre-sequenced and pre-recorded material versus real-time production generally varies from one performance to the next. In many cases, live performance are a combination of the two.
