Biography of Stacey Pullen

Under the influence of Kraftwerk, Derrick May, Juan Atkins and Jeff “The Wizard” Mills, Chicago and Italian house music and the radio icons of the Electrifyin’ Mojo and WBMX/Chicago, Stacey Pullen was nurtured in the rich, fecund musical soil of Detroit in the mid 80’s. Inspired by the mystical epicenter of the techno earthquake, The Music Institute, Stacey began spinning at local venues and underground parties only to chuck it for a short three years to pursue a collegiate career.

Drawn back by his destiny, Stacey released his Ritual Beating System under the alter ego known as Bango. The full, resonant tribal percussion of that release opened the musical minds of others who followed with tribal dance tracks of their own. Similar to the innovators that came before him, Pullen’s first release was a big sound influencing others throughout the world.

As a result of remixing projects and a hoard of releases on KMS Records, Eclipse Records, BMG/Ariola, Buzz, PIAS/Belgium, R&S, Warner, Virgin and, of course, Transmat Records, Stacey has been in demand all over the world mixing magic on the dance floors to countless fans. His exotic style has taken him all over North America, the Dutch Caribbean, Chile, Australia, Japan and throughout Europe.

At the same time he has developed his vibe into a mixture of ambient, jazzocentric grooves. Silent Phase… the signature of his first album on Transmat Records. Born under the sign of the Twins, Stacey’s music is dual in perspective and approach. True to the pure electronic sound of the 80’s/90’s, he grooves with a round, heavier African bottom. Flowing from two inherent sources Silent Phase is both the passion and energy of the soul fused with the vision and expansiveness of his mind’s eye.

Comment: This is a solid live mix. The sound allows for a live feel, as you can hear the crowd slightly. However, even though often times that allowance is on parallel with poor sound quality, this particular case is not bad. The sound is still in your face when it is cranked. As for the mixing...dope! Stacey is on top of it. The tracks are dark, funky, stylish detroit-esque techno/minimal tracks...great for a dance floor or jammin' in the car.

Comment: Well crafted set with an excellent mix of funky through to more minimal detroit. Seamlessly mixed as you would expect - some crowd noise and an occasional and slightly irritating voice promoting the radio station that it was taken from but still well worth the download.

Comment: This is a phenomenal mix! This is everything I love about funky techno.

Since personal preference is almost everything when describing the mood of a mix I want to say something about the other reviews (nuclearflower and dbx). I didn't feel like there was anything 'dark' about this mix and I wouldn't classify anything here as minimal techno (no disrespect). The closest it gets to minimal still has vocals over it creating particular moods and conveying messages important to Stacey (consistent themes for him are about love, solidarity, and equality/liberation - hence the Malcolm X vocal here).

For me this was a beautiful bumpin' mix from the very start. It begins with a slightly less intense feel in the 2 or 3 songs at the start - where you're movin' with the beats. Then it just gets funkier and funkier with denser sounds in the track selection though no appreciable BPM increase. Stacey Pullen just brings you with him on a little journey.

As the mix gets more intense it also gets funkier and the impulse to move your body turns into the need to jack your body! The mix (really the tracks) are playful throughout and I found myself bouncing around my house with my stupid 'cool pose' club smile on my face at times and had to laugh at myself.

This mix brought me back to the last two times I saw Stacey spin. Club 6 in San Francisco has this poorly lit baren basement where I spent my favorite night clubbing since moving to the Bay Area (California) and a few months ago at the horribly lit and designed club Temple in SF. Temple had the worst people there and they seemed to have no idea who was on the decks... This man is a legend! The beats were incredible and made me forget all the fools around me. Same effect here with the stupid smile on my face.

As for track selection... I don't really know any of the tracks except from his other mixes. Still, I loved them all. One track sounded like a remix or bite of Motorcross Madness (which is on DJ Dan's Funk the System CD). The mixing was pretty tight except one odd moment at 31:30. It was a difficult transition and the station dropped a Radio ID tag right over it making it even worse. Truly the only drawback to this mix is those radio ID tags dropped throughout the mix. without them I would be hard pressed to not give this mix 10 out of 10.

I have also downloaded and reviewed Stacey Pullen's RBOM on XM80 mix on this website. This is a MUCH better mix than that, in spite of the ID tags. If you are torn between his downloads and trying to figure out which to get definitely give this one a try! I strongly recommend this mix. And remember, if you agree or disagree with my reviews let that inform whether you listen to my advice ever again.

Much love (especially to Stacey Pullen)
