Biography of Holotropik
I am not going to bore you with the usual 'BIO' most artists preach. This is not a resume through which I propose in order to get more work or sell myself into the industry.
I prefer to discuss my perspective, future aspirations and meaning. This will give you a more in-depth explanation of what I am about. If you must know, yes!, I have a history with music and know how to play instruments. I have also performed at various levels. My family has a long history within music from my grandfather who was a great Jazz drummer, my mother who is a piano teacher and my father who is a guitarist and long time entertainer with a theatrical background. I guess the funny thing about my family is its contrasting relationship with engineering. I am the 4th generation mechanical/electrical engineer in my family.
Music is the 'key-stone' of my world. It means everything to me. I find it an escape and a way to relate to the world at the same time. When I look back I refer to different stages of my life by the music that I listen to or write. I don't watch TV and hold little meaning in other forms of entertainment. I am always listening. The current form of Dance-music (Electronic Dance Music) is the field that I am primarily focussed on. It represents a sense of community that is neglected in society today. I also hold onto the ancient values and ideals that dance music, in its current form, has grown from over the millennia. I view a Dance music event as a coming together of people in celebration, sharing and occasion rather than an industry or business.
As an artist I have been mostly on the outskirts of the Electronic scene. I have not chosen this position but rather see my progression as something I wish to allow to happen in its own time. Music is something I like to do and explore rather than form into a business. Things happen in their own time and with determination and consistent effort I progress along this road appropriately. This is how I like to do things, a more spiritual pursuit.
I support and promote the musicianship that is constantly growing in a traditional DJ driven Dance-music scene. I don't DJ, rather, I produce and play my music directly from modern electronic instruments. I compose the music using various sources such as Drum-machines, samplers and synthesisers. Using these various instruments I then conduct a set of music that is driven by factors such as my emotions, ideals and my need to communicate a message. My music is driven by the need to say something that matters and is important - things that are often overlooked by us in our daily grind. When I am invited to play at an event I research the ideals and feelings of the promoters running the event so that I can colour my music to suit the same attitude. I also refer to various other sources before I play to tap into the 'vibe' most prevalent at the time which helps the energy flow of the party. No use playing to suit my ego and force it upon people who would require something different. I deliver my music but can blend it more to suit what is appropriate. For that reason I never play the same set twice.
Being able to adjust my sound to suit different occasions is the main principle behind why I play Live with an improvised technique. I am fascinated by the technology and what it is doing for music. It means I have the ability to do more as a solo artist and take the feelings and ideas into uncharted territory or deliver familiar sounds with my own concepts. For the last 6 years I have been developing this technique and playing Live at various events. Playing at events gives me the experience to fine-tune exactly what people want on the dance-floor and learn to be flexible with my sound. I have also connected with some amazingly talented people in that time as well.
I have also shared some awesome times with the party people at various events. Its these connections and moments that I find the most rewarding.
What I am most interested in now is to meet up with other similar artists and play together on stage to deliver a totally improvised mash-up set. The energy gained from two or more artist working on stage is amazing and very special. Things happen that otherwise wouldn't which often leaves one astounded by how that happened.
I am also at the stage where I want to produce an album that expresses my ideals and feelings on one side while having a side to it which is totally dance-floor driven.
A listening side and a dancing side.
Music is my way of life.
I am just here....
