Biography of Duncan F
To say that Duncan F is one of the main men responsible for the phenomenon that we call house music in Malta is no understatement. Duncan F has been responsible for introducing many people to house music with his epic residencies at Funky Mushroom, Bar Funk & Candy Box.
His first approach to dance music was in 1993 at the young age of 13 when he used to form part of a Hip Hop band together with 3 other friends. Two of which are now also established DJs (Trevor C and Drury).
Like most Old Skool Maltese DJs, Duncan F, was introduced to DJing by David Dee at whom he attended a course together with Trevor C.
With influences varying from Hip-Hop and US house giants like Frankie Knuckles and Masters at Work, to Prodigy and Westbam, Duncan always had an open minded approach towards music but after experimenting with Progressive House, Trance and Garage his direction always led him to House music.
At the age of 15 Duncan had already got his first residency at ‘Places’ together with his fellow DJ Trevor C. But his real breakthrough came at the Tribu event in 1998 at La Grotta. Where for the first time here in Malta, after the Techno domination, House music started to gain credit again. He had headlined the house room in this memorable event. He became the obvious choice for all top promoters who used to book him to warm up every big International DJ such as Seb Fonatine, Sasha, Nick Warren, Derrick May and more.
Later on that year Bar Funk opened where Duncan F was also the DJ promoter along with Trevor C. His residency at Bar Funk will always be remembered as a milestone in the Dance scene here in Malta. It was in this period that together with the newly born Fresh DJ Agency and the ‘Funk It’ nights, Malta saw the rebirth of House music and got the local scene out of Techno domination. Finally there was a weekly club dedicated to house lovers and Duncan F was responsible for the huge hype created around this new sound.
1999 saw a continuation of Duncan F’s sets at Bar Funk. He used to play a unique combination of new music, often dropping classics, combining UK, French and US house. Duncan’s style is very versatile; his extensive experience has given him a unique ability to read a crowd and ‘Deliver the Highest Standard’ every-time he performs.
Duncan’s recording/production career is an interesting one that has seen him leaving the Maltese Islands to go and study an Audio Engineering course in London at the S.A.E. Technology College in late 2000.
While studying Duncan also managed to impose himself in the very competitive UK club scene and performed in clubs such as Sminky’s and Detroit Cafe in Covent Garden. On his return to Malta a year later he started off producing some local Rock bands while experimenting with some House tracks.
His love towards promotion led Duncan to organise some excellent events in 2002 where as part of Red Promotions he organised 2 events aboard both the Hera 1 & 2 and at Frenchies. Apart from this Duncan started off Vertigo promotions together with Steve Caesar and Drury which lead to a very successful winter season at the newly opened Candy Box. A weekly residency also came by the following summer, at the Courtyard, Gianpula together with G7.
2003 saw Duncan F busier than ever, his work as a DJ had never been in such demand. He played regularly at venues like Places, Brass Monkey, Strings, Westin and all the top House events in Malta. In 2003 he also played at Ground Zero in Poland where he attracted the attention of the press and various others club owners and promoters. The Dance scene is one where each week new genres are invented and fresh DJ’s grab the limelight, so it takes a very innovative DJ to keep his career going for all these years!
When it seemed like he couldn’t do anymore, Duncan created
In d ‘ouse promotions with Drury & Dimbleby in 2004. Touring and rocking every single club and venue on the island. Week after week, all the year round!
2005. Duncan F is still the choice for all top promoters that book him to play with top International and local Djs.
Along with In d ‘ouse he has escalated into one of the biggest fusions of music in Malta. But still keeping up a quality concept of music and clubbing!
The future holds many surprises from the Peter Pan of House. He is working on various projects with his fellow DJ/producers. One of which is his most secret project called ‘The F experience’.
