Submodern 'There is sometimes an attitude among electronic musicians that anything that sounds too pop, too melodic, too accessible is 'lesser' art than weird, bizarre, seemingly random stuff,' says Art Kerns, who provides the 'purty melodies' that accompany Dallas Kashuba's blips, bleeps and quirky beats in the San Francisco electro duo Submodern. 'We were sort of poking fun at that idea with the 'sub' part of Submodern.' Instead of focusing on annoying abstract noises, Submodern took a path of turning strange sounds into good electro songs. Kerns and Kashuba met in the early '90s while students at Harvey Mudd College in Southern California. They minored in cutting class and merging their two huge record collections. Around 2000, the two K-men started an Internet radio show called 'Cryptic Funk,' playing 'weird but accessible' electronic music. The likes of Aphex Twin, m-Ziq and Future Sound of London all influenced the future blips and bleeps of Submodern. They have since spent several summers playing their music from a rainbow- and cloud-covered car at Burning Man. Take Submodern for an experimental test drive this weekend at Retox Lounge.
we are still locked away in the submodern studio finishing up our ambient album slowburn. true to its name, it's going a bit, well, slow. we are finally done with most of the recording, and are starting work on the mixing phase. hopefully it will be finished and ready to be mastered in a month or two. if you're interested in following our progress, you can read regular updates in the slowburn blog, which also has daily recommendations of good music, both new and old.
we are also working on some remixes for local artists, the first will be for general fuzz, go check out his music, it's fantastic.
