Undeniably one of London's finest underground DJ's, Richards passion for music was sparked by his big sister and he began spinning vinyl at the age of 9. As the art of playing records became more serious for him he immersed himself in jazz funk and disco - a true dance fan from the start. Richard was into House since it first arrived on our shores and acquired his first set of decks of 88. At this time he was a dedicated clubber soaking up acid vibes at seminal clubs such as Spectrum, Click Street and Shoom.
Richards first 'House' gig in early 89 and as one of few experienced and experimantal DJ's around he soon secured a residency at Voodoo. This unforgettable club was held in Dungeons at Lea Bridge where he was spinning alongside Colin Faver, Mr C, Evil Eddie Richards and Kid Bachelor. From late 89 to late 1990 Richard graced the airwaves on London's wicked pirate station Dance FM with a two-hour mix show every Sunday. At the time he was one of the few DJ's playing freestyle and his show was massively popular on this station which also featured Rob Actesson, Femi B and Mr C.
In 1990, as Richard's DJ career was blossoming he won a scholarship to study TV and Theatre Production in York and was awarded 'Student of the Year'. Continuing with work in TV, he took on the job of Production Manager at a multi-media college whilst his DJ skills lay dormant. In 92 he thankfully returned to London and his rightful place behind the decks to pick up where he'd left off the underground trail. Richard was soon playing at the best acid house parties such as Heart and Soul and The Drop alongside old contemporaries Colin Faver, Mr C, etc. His production skillsskills were put to good use too with the ever-versatile Mr Grey acting as floor/production manager on several events including the Robert Owens/Arnold Jarvis showcase for Freetown Records in 93. After guesting on several Plink Plonk Records touring showcases he was invited to join the company in 94 and worked on Promotion, Production and A&R. Firmly re-instated as a jewel in London's crown Richard took up a residency at Megatripolis, becoming their longest-standing resident at just over five years.
Since then his unique, deep and groovy tech-funk sets have been in demand at all the best parties and he was heavily involved in the promotion and success of Plink Plonk's Vapourspace as well as his own co-production Skizm. In late95, Richard left Plink Plonk to concerntrate on his DJ and recording projects. When time allows, he can be found once a week working at Swag records to feed his vinyl habit, although since 2000 this has become more and more difficult due to playing commitments abroad.
Richard describes his styles as versatile and eclectis. He is equally comfortable playing dirty old skool garage as he is slammin techno. Richard's trademark is his deep, melodic style and he is certainly one of the current innovators of the UK's nu'house movement, bringing down the walls between House and Techno.
