Biography of Gillsans

As my youthful aggression started to fade and my hunt for new music continued forward, I started to check out more electronic music in 2001. At around the same time I was very fortunate to see a live pa performance from Ricardo Villalobos and Ric Y Martin in spring of 2001, who were in Victoria after Mutek. That show turned me on to sounds that I've never heard before. I became fascinated by the use of simple sounds compiled in a way that sounded fresh and also maintained emotion. Searching around for other artists, I started listen to Matthew Jonson who lived in Victoria and would perform with Cobblestone Jazz. Spencer from ITISWHATITIS would come around and he used to bring over the new IIWII records for me to check out. Eventually I found more Montreal and German minimal techno and house stuff like Mike Shannon, Jetone, Dimbiman, Jeff Milligan, Roman Flugel, Hakan Lidbo and Deadbeat among plenty of others. I started to hear the connection between the sounds of Berlin and Detroit. I couldn't help but be heavily influenced by the dubby sounds of Basic Channel, Maurizio and Deepchord and the emotions they provided.
