Hailing from Norfolk, VA, USA, Phrantik has already made a name for himself in many DnB circles, even though he has only been producing seriously since 2002. He got bit by the DnB bug back in 1996 (the Wax Doctor remix of Alex Reece’s classic “Basic Principles”), and it has stayed with him through today. With his background in playing live instruments (bass, guitar & drums), he brings a different vibe to the scene, employing his live roots to certain tunes, which also enables him to better play with certain elements of tracks, and switch up the flavor to suit the mood. His style is unorthodox by design, but it has a certain synergy and bridges the gap between the classic “Blue Note” era and the more aggressive, “B-Boy” style of DnB that his HORSEMEN affiliates are providing to the masses.
He burst onto the scene as a relative unknown, getting his first bit of shine with a tune entitled “Claustrophobia” on Gasm. He was asked to provide a sample pack so that the one like Mutt could rework his tune, and in sending Mutt a track entitled “Beige”, his ascent from no one to the one the HORSEMEN want to get to know was quick. Mutt passed this track to Loxy, who then enlisted Perpetuum to remix “Jinnel Killa” (which he reportedly knocked up in two days, giving him “Jedi status” with the one like Loxy), which lead to him putting out his first solo 12”, “Urban Afterglow” b/w “Big Star” for Ink’s Colours Audio. This release garnered some much-deserved praise throughout the scene, as this rising star went from the middle of nowhere to being affiliated with not only Loxy & Ink’s HORSEMEN crew, but with labels such as Freak, 13 Music, Renegade Hardware, Renegade Recordings, X-Tinction Agenda, Architecture, Horizons Music, Spearhead Recordings, Gasm, Translation and many others.
His future is looking bright, currently. He has tracks lined up for the following labels: “Villains”, his collaboration with FRISKe, as well as “Beige” are set to drop on the upcoming “Revelations” LP for Renegade Hardware; “Dollar and Change” with Gremlinz is set to drop on Architecture; a bit with Loxy, “Freedom” is looking towards Renegade for its home; his number with Aspect, “Bleeps” is coming out on Freak; the aforementioned “Claustrophobia” and “10s” are set to drop on Gasm; a tune that is a tribute of sorts to DJ Shadow, “A#
