Biography of Princess Superstar
Princess Superstar (born Concetta Kirschner, 1971) is an American rapper.
Her musical style —a mixture of hip hop, rock and electronica— is 'flip flop', as she describes it. Her parents were psychologists, and they moved the family to Philadelphia, sending Kirschner to a private school named Germantown Academy. Kirschner was socially awkward, and claims her time in school was 'from hell.' She was a member of the Singing Club, the Theatre Club and the Black Student Union.
She is of Jewish-Italian heritage from the suburbs of Philadelphia. After graduating from high school, she moved to New York City and studied acting at New York University, learning to play the guitar and sending a demo tape to the College Music Journal and Grand Royal, a record label headed by the Beastie Boys. Her debut was called Strictly Platinum, and gained her some notoriety as one of very few white rappers, as well as for her openness regarding her Jewish heritage and gender-related issues.
Princess Superstar has collaborated with Kool Keith, Jon Spencer, Bahamadia, MC Paul Barman, the High and Mighty, The Prodigy, Moby, DJ Yoda, Disco D, Mason, and others. Some of the producers that worked with her include Prince Paul, Curtis Curtis, Beth Orton, Arthur Baker, Junior Sanchez, Todd Terry, and DJ Mighty Mi from the High and Mighty.
Stephen Merchant of The Office fame is generally acknowledged as the person who broke Princess Superstar in the U.K., as mentioned in his Xfm 104.9 Saturday show on 23.03.2002, with the lanky writer/producer playing the track 'Things are gonna get better.'
