Biography of Usual Suspects
The duo known as Usual Suspects has been responsible for some dancefloor-shaking tunes since their white-hot release Killa Bees.' They pay considerable attention to the US jungle scene, something not found in most producers' characteristics and their desire to be stationed in the States at some point parallels their growing respect for the maturing sound therein. This respect is surely exemplified in the furious, tech-heavy sound of their remix of DJ Flux's 'Ransack' on Compound Recordings, a San Francisco-based drum & bass imprint borne from the renowned store of the same name.
The Suspects-Chris & Keaton, anyway- have just finished their set and are ready to hit the late night Chicago watering holes. Luckily, I'm able to get in a few questions before they duck out.
What would you say has been a pivotal 'first' record for you?
Chris: There are so many, really. In the beginning, it was probably Joey Beltram. Yeah, Joey and early R & S records. Definitely R & S Records. Belgian techno.
In your opinion, where is the sound going?
Keaton: I think it's stopped evolving and it's just being recycled now. I think that it's been taken so far with the techno sound and the repetitive sound that no one was really developing anymore. And, what happened was we've done a full circle, like any music scene does, and it kind of got back to the hardcore stuff, which was pioneered by Digital and Total Science and everyone like that. Now, everyone is just doing a futuristic version of hardcore and the musical stuff is just coming back in.It's just re-doing the circle, you know, just coming back in a circle. I don't know where it'll be next but I know it's it's not quite there.
Do you see yourself jumping into any other genres?
[in enthusiastic unison] Hip hop! One of our dreams has been to work with someone like Mobb Deep or Wu-Tang. Mobb Deep is like, the ambition coming complete, you know what I mean?
Name some of your upcoming projects.
Chris: We've got tune on the Hardware album under Suspects, there's the Universal Project thing; got a tune on the album and a 12' coming as well. I've got a label starting called Vicious Circle as well, so there are a few things in the pipeline at the moment.
Where will you be in 5 years?
Making hip hop, man; going on tour w/ Wu-Tang Clan and Mobb Deep. I don't really know where I want to be in 5 years. 5 years ago, I didn't see myself DJing in Chicago on a Wednesday night. I'd love to be living in LA, being able to run my shit through England, so it's still all England-based, while still producing hip hop and DJing drum & bass.
Most valuable thing you've learned:
We've learned to not be lazy and remain motivated. The second you start believing the hype could be your downfall. You get lazy and that's when you fall off. You're only as good as your last tune, so that's why you've got to maintain the whole time and keep your feet on the ground, and remember to keep it real and where you're from and just fuckin' rock hard, man. Maintain.
Do you cater to a certain type of listener when producing your records?
Nah, to me that was our downfall; we started to watch for what people wanted. That's when I feel that our music was bad, but now, we're putting the soul back in it and really creating what we're feeling. Now, the soul's come back into it and you can do a musical thing or a jump-up thing, a hip hop or techno and breaks thing; it would all work now whereas back then, it wouldn't. I think that was maybe our bad point, when we were trying too hard to please the crowd.

Biography of DJ Ink
An architect of sound first visualizes then realises, making something out of nothing, making sure that not only the object itself shines but also the space around it. The sound is moulding, shaping and morphing at the hands of Dj Ink...
Tribal/ Bboy/ Mechanical/Organic/Abstract/Groove
Ink built architecture recordings as an outlet for his musical output-solely to get good music on the shelves, fast fwd to today and the label is held in massive regard by peers, new producers and veterans alike, but in order to really get the essence we need to go back, way back
Its 1990 and a young Dj Ink has solidified his love for the culture known as hip hop- as the years move on so does UK street music, there are new genre’s forming and Ink begins to hear what is familiar to him, but there is a new twist-it is the UK passing by the USA, with a huge dose of African and Jamaican influence , and of course this is music to a budding Dj Ink’s ears, he naturally becomes involved and it doesn’t take too long before he begins to make his mark..
First begins the Pirate Radio Circuit, working hard at his craft, allowing the followers to get familiar with the roll, steadlily bookings began to build up and soon it would be time for Ink to become associated with three names that changed the landscape of British electronic music-and they were Basement Records, and slightly later Metalheadz and Renegade Hardware
If your familiar with drum n bass/jungle you’ll know instantly the weight these labels carry, and if you are not by just scratching the surface you’ll become aware of the work they have done, Hardware, and Metalheadz are two commitments Dj Ink has upheld to this day, through thick and thin, engraved in the wall of time...
Essential work includes “The 50th (Blueprint)”on Basement Records, ‘Feel da heat’ taken from the LP ‘Can u draw sound?’ on Architecture Recordings, ‘Kaos Theory Ep’ on Renegade Hardware, ‘Shine’ on Metalheadz, and the now infamous posse cut ‘Instinct’ Also on Architecture, this is just a small fraction by Ink that has made waves...
Horsemen, Unifying the four corners... In order to find strength in numbers and to truly be able to judge how far the sound has travelled you can look to the international crew of beat-makers alligned under the Horsemen banner. Originally 4 UK london artists Dj Ink, Loxy, Keaton+Dylan, and then expanded to include Countries such as Canada, Brazil,The USA and Puerto Rico, Ink worked with Renegade Hardware to Realize two Lp’s from the Horsemen Camp and orchestrated various other Projects for Architecture.
