Biography of Maestro B
Real name: Brent Silby
I started in 1988 operating lightshows at “Xanadu Nightclub” in Christchurch city, New Zealand. The opportunity to work with lighting equipment came about through “Ex-Ray Staging”, a sound and lighting company owned by Mel and Wally Blokhuis (my uncles). Ex-Ray Staging supplied very large sound and lighting systems to a number of Christchurch city bars and clubs.
In 1990, I was given the opportunity to fill in for a local DJ for a few nights. It was very much a case of being in the right place at the right time. From that start, I began to build my own record collection and managed to secure a residency at a small club known as “Flapper’s NiteSpot”. The club featured a live band, and I played 45 minute sets during the band breaks.
After Flapper’s, I DJ’d in several clubs developing my record collection and sound. During the mid 1990’s my sound was very much focused on commercial club/dance. In 1995, I was offered a residency at “The Palladium Nite Club” (one of the city’s largests clubs in the day). Initially, I played on Saturday nights but eventually played Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday nights. During my time at the Palladium, my sound evolved to include a strong House feel which nicely augmented the commercial dance sound. This evolution was due, in part, to the influence of the other resident DJ “therobsta”. The residency at the Palladium ran for 2 years, after which time I moved to a brand new club called “Sneakers” where I remained resident for just over 2 years.
In addition to DJ’ing, I run a popular online videogame site: www.def-logic.com. I also teach at an alternative highschool known as “Unlimited School” www.unlimited.school.nz, where (in addition to other options) I offer a course called “How to mix like a DJ”. This course gives teenagers the opportunity to develop their musical tastes, build a record collection, and mix live on the school radio station.
At this time I am a resident DJ with Audiodreams as DJ “Maestro B”. Audiodreams are organizers of dance parties and events for all ages. Most of these events are alcohol free and are extremely popular, drawing huge crowds of people who want to dance to the best electronica we can offer. I also produce sets for dance music radio and run a House music review site www.brentishouse.com.
