Biography of Rhythm and Sound

Rhythm and Sound are Moritz Von Oswald and Mark Ernestus.

Rhythm & Sound released a series of 10' records on Burial Mix and 12' records on Rhythm & Sound, both labels distributed by Hardwax. Von Oswald and Ernestus' Rhythm & Sound recordings are much more dub-influenced and less techno-orientated than the duo's previous, and more legendary, dub-techno recordings as Basic Channel and Von Oswald's solo work as Maurizio. Where those earlier recordings synthesized a Detroit-influenced style of minimal techno with dub-reggae bass lines, the late-'90s Rhythm & Sound productions emphasized the dub-reggae aesthetic rather than the more dancefloor-orientated techno sound of the early-'90s Basic Channel and Maurizio recordings. Thus, the Rhythm & Sound records, which often featured reggae vocalist Paul St. Hilaire, weren't quite as popular or well-known as the duo's Basic Channel recordings, which instead retained their popularity over the years, becoming quite legendary and oft-cited within the techno scene. Nonetheless, Von Oswald and Ernestus' Rhythm & Sound work prevailed into the early 2000s, being compiled on two listener-friendly CDs, Showcase (1998) and Rhythm & Sound (2001).

Aliases: Basic Channel, Cyrus, Maurizio, Phylyps, Quadrant, Radiance, Round Five, Round Four, Round One, Round Three, Round Two

Comment: This set set is in three parts so I'm going
to comment on all of it here. Since this
is Von Oswald and Ernest performing
as Rhythm and Sound, this isn't
Basic Channel-style techno,
just nearly three hours of basically
dubby sounds.

Nothing earthshattering here,
just some nice dub, great for
relaxing to or for early morning/late
evening listening. If you like dub,
this is certainly worth a download.

Comment: its a good mix, its just hard to get over the clipping of the recording. I guess if you had a crappy stereo you might not notice haha. But that said, all the tracks are enjoyable if you are into dub.

Comment: I agree with the comments above. This is great for fans of Dub! The audio is not the best, especially if you really want to feel the rolling basslines. But it's a great set for fans of Rhythm & Sound, Burial Mix, etc. I've never had the chance to see R&S live so this is extra special for me.

Comment: I loved getting my hands on this little treasure, as well as the other parts. I listened to the first part in the car today while on my travels. It's awesome stuff, as ever from the pair. I saw them play a Dub 45 set in Manchester last year with Tikiman. It was a very good night and it's cool to have a similar mix by them to bring back the fond memories.

On the negative side, I had to turn the bass up a lot on my stereo to appreciate the Dub basslines as they were a little lacking on the recording but not too bad once I had +5 the bass.
