Biography of Todd Sines
Todd Sines was born in the rust belt of Cleveland, Ohio; home to urban funk greats such as the Ohio Players, Zapp, White Cherry, Devo and Midnight Starr; contrasted with Todd’s rural childhood surroundings, Ohio laid the groundwork for Todd’s unique synthesis of ideas in sound.
His interest in music began with his affinity for electro and hip hop in 1983. Artists such as Whodini, Newcleus, and the Art of Noise served as the inspiration to follow music more closely. Drawing inspiration from post-punk acts such as Cabaret Voltaire, Gang of Four, Sonic Youth, Big Black, Einsturzende Neubauten and My Bloody Valentine, in 1988, he played guitar and drums, before settling with bass in his 3rd band with fellow student Mike Szewczyk.
After seeing 808 State live on MTV in 1989, and hearing these early futuristic tracks from Detroit, he decided that he wanted to produce electronic music and moved to Columbus, Ohio for his college education. Through Todd’s music and design ‘zine, “Visual Razorblade,” he made his first connection with Detroit’s Mad Mike and Jeff Mills, as well as 808 State, LFO, The Orb, Coil, Chris & Cosey, Meat Beat Manifesto and Emigré’s Rudy Vanderlans, all of which have had a great influence on his
approach to design and music.
In 1991, while in Columbus, Todd met Titonton Duvanté and Charles Noel and the 4 started producing music as Body Release. He began a devout interest in synthesizers, after trading his bass for a Roland SH-101, a classic analogue synthesizer. Although the group decided to call it quits in 1993, each of them gained valuable experience from working with one another. Todd redirected his efforts to his own productions and developing his DJing skills.
Todd established liaisons with Detroit producers and DJs Paris Mack, Billeebob, Claude Young, and Brian Gillespie who traveled down to Columbus for several successful parties in late 1992. Todd met his favorite Detroit producers: Carl Craig and Dan Bell. Both were interested in the different styles of Todd’s music; the stripped down minimal tech house funk as .xtrak interested DBX for a release on his recharged 7th City label. Carl was interested in the more melodic sounds he was producing for the Elements of and Experiments With Sound release on Planet E in 1993. In 1994, Todd released his first solo release on Peacefrog Records as .xtrak.
After hosting, organizing [as a co-founder of ele_mental] and playing several DJ gigs and live PAs over the Midwest from 1993–1996, Todd took a break from touring and making music. His production resurfaced in 1999 with his Hi8Us LP release. It appeared on Residual, from fellow Ohio producer Titonton Duvante. Over the last 7 years he has released new material on Background, Frankie, Philpot, Planet E, Scatalogics, Sunday Best, and has composed soundtracks for film intros, commercials, and sound design for film + broadcast. In addition to producing music, Todd is the director of his own design studio, + SCALE, the convergence of art, design, architecture, fashion, sound and film.
Todd’s recent release on Planet E is entitled “overlap” and features Montreál vocalist Natacha Labelle. These two are currently working in the studio on a full-length album. Gilles Peterson, the definitive word and tastemaker of today’s neo-soul, house and jazz, recently played “come closer [Moonstarr’s broken dub]” on his internationally-renowned World Wide show, saying, “...this tune’s just killing me right now... murder!”
The release is also in the playlists of BBC Radio 1’s Benji B, Carl Craig [featured on his recent mix CD, The Workout], Steve Bug [featured on his recent mix CD, da minimal funk 3], Thomas Fehlmann, Soul Phiction, Zip / Dimbiman, Ricardo Villalobos, Moonstarr, Titonton Duvanté + Thomas James [Residual]; Swag, Charles Webster, Alex Attias, Adam Marshall, Ulysses, amongst many others. It also made music journalist + author Dan Sicko’s Top Ten singles for 2002.
He is currently back in the studio for several new projects for some prominent US, English, and German labels, and is actively DJing across the States and Europe. He recently completed a series of remixes for Beta Bodega Coalition of LA’s UltraRed, former collaborator Mike Szewczyk’s latest project, txt, for 21/22, a remix of Compost recording artist Moonstarr’s “dust+water” on the Japanese label P-Vine and Public Transit Recordings, and a remix of the Japanese bossa / jazz outfit, Soul Bossa Trio for the Italian label Irma On Canvas. Recent releases include a compilation appearance with Natacha Labelle on the Vienna-based Ecco.Chamber broken house / lounge compilation, “destination out vol.2” and a track for SoulPhiction’s Philpot Records in Hamburg, Germany.
In addition, Todd is finishing production on a minimal house 12” for Frankie Records out of Paris, France; descend, a forthcoming album on the German label Background. His production schedule for the new year features remix swaps with Charles Webster for his label, Miso Recordings; and a return to his successful minimal tech house alias as .xtrak.
Recent recording sessions with vocalists Genevieve Marienette [recorded with Recloose, Justin Chapman, Theo Parrish], African Canadian Ndidi Onukwulu, Polish German Justine Süsser and Sabiil Farias from the Dominican Republic, with musicians James Duncan [trumpet, who records for DFA, Environ, Traxxx and Le Systeme] and Stacy Dillard [tenor sax] will be incorporated into several new projects, challenging the barriers between house, jazz, lounge, trip-hop, indie, and experimental genres. He’ll also be working with fellow Ohio-born artist Geoff White on a “versus” project.
