Biography of Richie Hawtin

Although of English and Canadian origins, Plastikman's Richie Hawtin is closely connected with the current Detroit techno scene associated with figures such as Kenny Larkin, Stacey Pullen, Eddie Fowlkes, and Derrick May. His Plus 8 label -- co-owned and operated with John Acquaviva -- is one of the most influential experimental dance music imprints, and Hawtin's own tracks recorded as Plastikman and F.U.S.E.. are highly regarded as faithful, intelligent, forward-stepping updates of the Detroit sound. A DJ of renown and growing in repute as a remixer, Hawtin's visibility as one of experimental dance music's more important and innovative figures has been on the rise since the release of his debut Plastikman album, Sheet One.

Born in the English burgh of Windsor in the early '70s, Hawtin's parents moved to Canada when he was nine. An early interest in electronic-based pop and dance music turned serious when Hawtin discovered the tracks being pumped out of his neighbor-across-the-river Detroit. Beginning as a DJ in 1987, Hawtin quickly became involved in composition through his direct involvement in Detroit's tight-knit community of musicians and producers. Combining early influences from European synth-pop groups like Kraftwerk and New Order with the stripped-down techno-futurism of Detroit innovators such as Juan Atkins and Derrick May, Hawtin's tracks are as steeped in Motor City tradition as they deviate from it in terms of texture and rhythmic complexity. Although 12-inches through Plus 8 and the European NovaMute label have all been pretty dancefloor-oriented, Hawtin's attention to techno-based listening music has been just as focused through his full-length albums. His ambitious series of mix albums -- including 1995's MixMag Live!, 1999's Decks, EFX & 909, 2001's DE9: Closer to the Edit and 2005's DE9: Transitions -- has emboldened his reputation as conceptualist DJ.

Comment: Okay, normally I'm a Hawtin hater, but holy @#%& this mix is on point! Might be one of the best sets from him I have heard in a while! Banging minimal beats with enough loops, effects and edits to keep your head bopping throughout the entire set! This set is recorded directly from the sound board so the quality is brilliant!

Comment: Really great session not the best I've heard from him but definatly worth the download. This mix reminds me of why I stay in the scene year after year. He really knows how to push twards the future. Great mix I highly recommend this.

Comment: if not for the beginning announcement, this would be a top notch set...but the english guy ruined it all the way down to an 8 or 9 for me. seriously, this set was most entertaining and ill have to agree with Al,i myself can be quite the Hawtin hater as of late. Rich does it up really nicely here, however, and i recommend this with full confidence.

Comment: This is a great set. Although I've heard better from him, he remains overall one of the top dj's through the years. He always keeps me going on dance floors and never disappointed me so far.

Comment: I've always been curious as to how good Hawtin would be live, especially after his masterful studio work such as the DE9 series. With this set -- the first I've heard from him -- I can say he lives up to his reputation as the master of minimal. I prefer the first half to the second, but it remains a great mix, and I'd definitely recommend it.

Comment: I recommend the download. This set is a good example of some his style of minimal techno. One of the best parts of Rich's sets, including this one, is the sounds that make you go - "what the ?*&$ is making that sound?". For me the only negative thing to say about this set is that it's just over an hour long.

Comment: What can you say - I've seen Hawtin play out a few times and this one seems to me to be a bit lighter than usual - maybe its perhaps the hearing it when not in a club scenario, but this definitely has a pool-party vibe to it for me.

Good, very good (its Richie Hawtin - he doesnt do rubbish) but if you're looking for an all out live-in-club mix then i would maybe not chose this one. Thats not to say its bad, but its just a bit lighter and more intricate than the relentless throbbing of the live sets of his i've been to.

Comment: this is good..its very minimal and light for the first 10 minutes then it kicks off good. some of the tracks are kinda housey though. not that its bad, but im w/ fish- ive seen him in the D a couple times and it was straight hard, bangin TECHNO! this is probably the best set from him I've heard on here though

Comment: What's up with the annoying announcer? If you didn't know who Richie was why were you there? That just seems weird to me. But besides that I found this mix to be just okay. It's very laid-back, like chill out for an interplanetary mission perhaps. I listened to it a couple times then deleted it. Enough said.
