Luke has been dj-ing since 1988 when Derrick Wright, a local junior high school friend, supplied him with a Farley Jackmaster Funk tape from Chicago’s WBMX radio station. Early influences included Farley, Derrick May, and Steve Silk Hurley. Luke went on to found the Doghouse Records label with Tim Shumaker [Home And Garden, 2nd Shift] - the first label of it’s kind in the Southwest which featured releases by Victor Simonelli, Jazz-N-Groove, and the then up-and-coming Derrick Carter.
While Tim has since moved to Chicago, Luke went on to create the icon. imprint in the Summer of 2000 to highlight his various tastes for soul-oriented music with releases from Brett Johnson, JT Donaldson, Phil Weeks [Robsoul, Paris] and a full length US LP/CD release from Derrick Carter under his Tone Theory guise. Luke’s remix production and remix work includes collaborations with Brett Johnson and Tim Shumaker and includes remixes of Phil Weeks’ upcoming EP on icon.
While you could never get him to admit it, [okay, maybe you could] Luke is the acknowledged Yoda of the Dallas dj scene and his record collection is said to be approaching one million pieces.
