Biography of John Acquaviva

Having Dj'd around the world for ages, appearing at thousands of clubs and parties and playing for a cumulative audience in the millions, John Acquaviva is following up a solid 2005 with an even bigger and full-on 2006. John's ambitious touring and production schedule for 2006 will be anchored by the launch of ACQUAHOLIC a 13 week Summer residency at Privilage in Ibiza the world's biggest club.

2005 was Acquaviva's most prolific and successful production year to date. Starting off with Maddox on the Mantra label, Lord of the Bling achieved critical and club acclaim in Italy, and was listed on many year-end best of charts. Following Bling, Zombie produced with rising star Tobias Lutzenkirchen (on Blufin) was one of clubland's biggest tracks and ended the year as one of Beatport's top 5 selling download. Collaborations with Ramon Zenker of Hardfloor fame rounded out the year with the much-heralded A2Z EP.

Having attained a solid reputation for impeccable mixed CD compilations, John released two virtual compilations the past year. Electro-Deluxe Volume 1 (an exclusive digital-only compilation) reached #12 on the German iTunes Store Pop chart, and hit #1 on the Electro chart. Following suit in the spring of 2006 with Volume 2 of the series, this also hit number 1 on the electro charts. This summer, look for the hard goods with the first ACQUAHOLIC mix CD on the super hot and exciting Munich-based Great Stuff Label, to compliment the weekly Privilege, Ibiza residency.

John has built a career around discovering artists and presenting new music to the world, starting with his labels launched in the 90Ős with Richie Hawtin. He has now again re-launched Definitive Recordings (House for All) to showcase a new and emerging breed of talent from all over the globe. Available digitally and on limited edition vinyl, Definitive Recordings features music by Dj Fadul, Dj Spot, Maxi Madrid, Kike Serrano, Alfonso Padilla, Motes & Fontalvo, with more to come.

John has participated in almost every facet of the music industry over the years. He has played a key role in bridging ideas, technology and people to innovate and revolutionize the way music is sourced and played. John was instrumental and pioneered the role of combining traditional turntable DJing with the digital world by discovering and helping to launch FinalScratch at the turn of the decade. Seeing the full potential of this vision since the very early days, John also became involved with another group of visionaries to found and launch Beatport.com, which has changed the way DJs and music fans buy and discover the music they love.

Comment: As the bio says Acquaviva has been around awhile. But that doesn't mean he's an over the hill DJ, like some of the other "oldtimers." I've been listening to his sets and CD compliations for quite some time and his stuff is usually pretty top-notch. This set is no exception.

There is a lot of electro style tracks mixed in with more techno-y tracks. While there are some more "serious" moments, I found this to be a rather playful, somewhat quirky set with a nice varied track selection. Very engaging. I've had it for several weeks now and I still listen to it regularly.

If you know and like Acquaviva, definitely give this set a listen. If you are not familiar with him, do yourself a favor and check out one of the "greats." Your ears (not to mention your ass) will thank you.

Comment: I guess I've never been fully sold on John Acquaviva. Perhaps because of his longevity, I give him another chance every few years, but again I was disappointed. At times it is tedious and adirectional, sort of like the monotony of Timo Maas. At other times it starts to get ok, but then drifts into an ill-placed trance number or repeats a remix of Aqualight for the Nth time. He bills himself as electro, but the grit is just not there.

Comment: Was well impressed with this. If you chose to ignore it and your of the more electronically minded, then you're in for a loss. The audio quality is very good and the set gets your attention from the start and delivers throughout most of it. Just a minor shame about the end where it seems unable to maintain its high calibre. Guess the light that burns twice as bright burns half as long. Get it ;D
