Biography of Cari Lekebusch

International DJ, producer, gothic b-boy and praying mantis. Born capricorn 1972, homebase Stockholm, Sweden. A sound architect with many pseudonyms; Mystic Letter K, Mr Barth, Fred, Shape Changer, Vector, The Mantis and Braincell to name a few. Music attracted Cari with great impact allready at an early age. Which made him start to collect records and edit music in the late 70´s. With his main inspiration deriving from Funk, Hip-Hop, Electro, House, and Techno he started to assemble his own production studio (Hybrid productions) during the 80´s. As well as studying Kung-Fu, Breakdancing and Graffiti. During the 90´s and 00´s Cari´s music productions resulted in hundreds of record releases, DJ and live performances plus non-stop worldwide tours with countless appearances on Television and Radio. And alongside Adam Beyer, Robert Leiner, Joel Mull and Jesper Dahlback, to name a few, played an important role in putting the swedish electronic music scene on the international map. No matter where the record store is; Tokyo to London to Los Angeles, if it is a respected one it will surely carry some 'swedish sounds'. Future plans and dreams for Cari include music and sound effects for video-games, film and television as well as producing more artists and solo projects.

Some of Cari´s early musical influences are coming from Sweden, USA & Germany; James Brown, Ralph Lundsten, Herbie Hancock, African Bambaata, Egyptian Lover, Chris 'The Glove' Taylor, Kraftwerk and Mantronix. His various productions and remixes can be found on; Drumcode, Truesoul records, Code Red, Railyard recordings, Heroes, Corb, Harthouse, Loop/Plumphouse Records, Missile, Jericho, Tortured, Electrix, Primevil, Telephatic, Svek, Planet Rhythm, Tronic music, MB Electronics, Subvoice, Superstition and more.

His own label projects include; H-Productions, KaunTrax, Djupt, Grundtakt, Trainspotters Nightmare, AudioMekanixc, Audio Pollution, KGB, Direkt and Spirit Fuel. Most releases have appeared on H-Productions which was formally known as Hybrid productions due to a legal twist back in 1998, with Awex inc´s group called Hybrid. The first Hybrid releases were Electro/Hip-Hop inspired beats, sadly sparse due to lack of currency. But around 1992 the label started a proper vinyl 12' inch output with the help of Glenn Wilson and Planet Rhythm Records. A few years later the label was accepted on the international electronic underground scene with its uncompromising cutting edge dance-music sounds.

Comment: The Mix is 26 minutes at 128 kbps (The short duration of this ‘mixtape’ is, in part, because it is part 1 of a series according to the MC).

I am not usually a fan of MCs except in hip hop but I was initially surprised by this guy, ‘KK.’ At first he started out with something to say which fit rhythmically and mood-wise; it seemed like he had prepared for the occasion. Later he improvised by connecting and playing off the samples in the tracks. That was nice and playful. However, as the mix moved on he returned to a small repertoire of rehearsed one word ‘improvisations’, repetitive, and frequently unintelligible, utterances, and self-identifications. That got a little boring (not annoying though), which is a disappointment because of the initial promise. Despite hesitations I would actually say the KK adds to the mix.

Despite this minor drawback (if it is one) the mix itself is quite nice. It starts out with some funky, bass heavy beats and the aforementioned good MCing. While the tracks remain nice throughout they progressive lose a bit of their edge. From early funkiness they move to some standard but full bodied beats (am I talking about techno or beer?) with some playful elements in most of the songs. There are, even in this short mix, a couple of ‘soulful’ or introspective moments/tracks which enrich the experience and keeps things from getting monotonous – as does the MCing, I am finding out on repeated listens.

Then at the end comes some of that Lekebusch standard Swedish/Scandinavian techno (not as innovative as many of his own earlier works). Fans will know what I am speaking of but for those who don’t, northern Europeans have, for over a decade, been carving out and creating their own distinct approach and sound in techno which is really wonderful. (Check out, for instance, Cari Lekebusch, Adam Beyer, and Joel Mull. Though not Swedish, Neil Landstrumm also deserves attention. Each is quite distinct in their ways and each is available for download here – though their DJ sets are obviously not the same as their original compositions).

While this isn’t an innovative mix (compared to other Lekebusch stuff I’ve heard) it is a nice hard techno mix with swinging beats throughout. This can definitely keep you dancing or nodding your head. The mixing is pretty much seamless except where he is changing moods, with no flaws to speak of. The short duration works in its own way because when it ends (if on repeat) it goes right back to the strongest portion of the mix. When it restarts it is good enough to make me want to stick with it again, and so I get sucked in.

For those of you who like punishing bass in your techno (as I do) it only take a little EQ tweaking to make this rattle your bones. Fun and recommended though there may be better (but certainly longer) mixes of his to get. I have downloaded 3 of his mixes from here so far. You can expect more reviews from me where I will compare his mixes available on this site and hopefully point you to the best ones.
