Biography of SK-2
REAL NAME - TERRY
AGE - 31
MUSIC STYLE - DRUM N' BASS (OCCASIONAL TRANCE SET FOR OLD TIMES SAKE)
18 years old, bought my first set of dex, a pair of Ariston belt-drives (c/w dodgy round dial type pitch control). At the time I owned a fairground attraction at a local Leisure Park, so my debut performance was from inside my paybox to a crowd of kids & middle age parents walking by.
Started mixing properly, got into the free party circuit under the guise of DJ Skitz & started building up a bit of a following. Started giving out mix tapes to friends, local promotors etc.
Finally saved up to buy a set of Technics 1210's, went in 3 ways with a couple of mates of mine, Mike David & Mike Ford (later to become DJ Tormentor & The Maestro). Started to experiment on mix tapes, dropping in samples over the mix from an old Atari ST.
After a few years of playing mainly Hardcore, Jungle & Techno, I eventually settled on Techno as my main style, although I was known to throw in the odd surprise DnB or Hardcore set every now & then. My debut club set was at the now demolished legendary Pawlett Manor, on an Up n' Coming DJ night, with the best set of the night earning the DJ a warm up slot at the main Friday night regular, Galactic. I ended up winning the prize, but turned it down as their music policy was a tad on the cheesy side and strangely enough, on the same night me & Mike David (who also played on the night) were offered to play at a new night just starting up in Bridgwater in a small back room of a pub, a lot more 'underground'. We took the booking which led to us being given a residency. We had some good nights there but neither of us were really happy playing to just 20 or 30 people every week, then after a few weeks, we were approached by the management of Pawlett Manor & asked if we would run a night for them. From this point on GBH Promotions was born, with a crew of 6 DJ's, Skitz (myself), Tormentor (Mike David), The Maestro (Mike Ford), Hedge (Simon David, brother of Mike, Local ex-Sketch Crew DJ Legend), Goo (Wicked DJ we poached from our previous residency, can't for the life of me remember his real name), Zike (Steve Matthews, Old Skool Scratch master, Anexception Crew). Our first event was on a Thursday night, it flopped massively but the management were impressed with the work we had done so they offered move us to a Saturday Night & make it a weekly thing.
After Galactic were booted out from their Friday night slot, we were offered to run another night as well as our GBH night, so we set up Revibalize - playing House in the main room & Hardcore in the back room while GBH was catering for the Technoheads & Jungle crew on the Saturdays. Both events kicked off massively, we started pulling in bigger crowds, booking bigger DJ's, making each event bigger and better than the last.
Summer of '98 Pawlett Manor was demolished. After trying a few small events at some local clubs, we ended up bagging a monthly residency at the infamous Depot, in Bristol. With an all-night license, 3 rooms, a host of some of the biggest name hardcore and techno DJ's on the scene, we couldn't go wrong. GBH was back in force. With each event bigger & better than the last, I was soon getting bookings from all over the country, from North @ The Void, Stoke-On-Trent to Dance Planet @ Cornwall Colliseum.
Decided to concentrate more on DJing than promoting, so I gave up my share of GBH, and left it in Mikes capable hands. Started getting more bookings from Fusion, Hardcore Heaven, North etc. and still kept my residency with GBH.
Still resident DJ for GBH but now at (The Legendary) Lakota in Bristol, as well as gigging nationwide.
Started experimenting with Beats & Breaks, playing Drum n' Bass sets under the guise of SK-2, still playing for GBH as Skitzy.
Played my last ever GBH residency set at Ether in Taunton, this was also the last time I played a techno set live (until Inferno).
Took a few years off for work commitments (I used to run Arcades don't you know!!), a spot of re-focusing and a lot of record shopping. Started buying mainly Drum n' Bass & Breakbeat instead of Techno.
Exploded back onto the scene with a brand new night, Inferno.
