Biography of Monolake

Robert Henke, born in 1969 in Munich. I was always fascinated by technology, wanted to become an engineer. Some day I discovered Oxygene by Jean Michel Jarre and I could not stop listen to it again and again. I did stupid jobs after school and finally had enough money to buy a Roland Juno-6 which allowed me to create strange electronic sound collages and I started played in a bad gothic band.

In 1990 I moved to Berlin. City of techno and of the Elektronische Studio der Technischen Universität. Computer music during daytime. Dancing at night.

I started making electronic music with Gerhard Behles and began to study sound engineering at the Hochschule für Film und Fernsehen in Potsdam Babelsberg, where I made sound installations and film soundtracks.

One of my installations lead to my first CD Piercing Music. One of the tracks of Gerhard and me was released on Chain Reaction and we named the project

m o n o l a k e

Later I started the imbalance computer music label while Gerhard founded the software company Ableton to create music software and I joined the team.

Monolake became a Robert Henke solo project with occasional support by friends, like Torsten 'T++' Pröfrock who added a new note to the sonic world of monolake on the album Polygon_Cities in 2004 and contributes to the Atlantic Waves network project.

My music is about the exploration of sound, rhythm and structure, about the interaction between a sonic event and the space in which it happens. During the years monolake got more focused on music for the dancefloor while I produce drones, electroacoustic soundscapes and media installations under my real name.

Biography of Safety Scissors

The boundary between 'artist' and 'geek' is fine, yet frequently unacknowledged or concealed by overzealous intellectuals. MPC (i.e., Safety Scissors) does little to hide his social awkwardness in the quirky techno he produces and performs. If anything, he would rather admit to being a geek than to being an 'artist' or a 'musician'. 'Anonymity is much more interesting. It's silly when people say they are an artist or a musician. They're just trying to cover up for something else- that they don't have a girlfriend or smell bad or suffer from alcoholism'.

Although he is the ultimate dork debonair, MPC does not over-obsess with the computing process. Singing on his latest works for Force Tracks and Plug Research, MPC experiments with camp techno. Upcoming releases on Carpark and his own label Proptronix similarly pervert techno formula with an electric ukelele and bubble gum.

MPC has an abstract and clumsy approach to making music and distinguishes himself from the intellectualism of abstract/minimal techno. The proud drop-out of the art school establishment pursues neither expressions of unmediated human feeling found in Abstract Expressionism or regimented lines of stucture in minimalism. Rather, with subtlety and smoothness, he references both in his unique sense of sarcasm.

When MPC is not sucked into the creative vortex of his studio or dragged out of town by his duties to music audiences worldwide, he likes to eat ice cream and ride his bicycle. Recently, he has fallen off his bike and sprained his wrist. In another incident, he injured himself in an unmentionable area while hopping between wooden posts.

Comment: My interest in this set is mostly for Monolake.

This is really an old mix. It's interesting to hear how Monolake sounded in 1999! I mean, it's the pre-"Ableton Live" era! His style of music is amazing. In this set he even used a recording of an airplane stewardess!!! And it fits very nicely in there, because he takes you flying anyway.
