Biography of Steve Bicknell
Steve Bicknell's name has over the past ten years become synonymous with the sound of Lost and the techno & house that it has pioneered and championed. Revered globally as one of the world's most consistent, forward-thinking and innovative parties Lost has defined and motivated a new generation of clubbers, dj's, artists and producers. Now, nearley a decade on, Steve Bicknell presents his first artist album that reflects the Lost dancefloor, or specifically the main Red room. Featuring 6 unreleased tracks interspersed with selected segments from Lost Recordings 1, 2, 3 and 4 Lost Recordings - The Collections is at the heart of a new vision of technology, art, dance and cultural progression. Underground? Cutting edge? Counter-culture? Sound (r)evolution? For many Lost represents a state of mind and a way of life that is artistically free to express and develop. Uncompromising, expressive and unique, this is Steve Bicknell's artistic dancefloor viewpoint. Listen.
Lost has become a phenomenon as much a party, sub-label, sound and style. For many Lost represents a techno movement putting quality before quantity and innovation before imitation. Built up through word of mouth ventures on a small underground network, Lost has introduced the UK to some of the world's greatest house, electronic and techno exponents bringing the likes of DJ Rolando, DJ Rush, Fumiya Tanaka, Richie Hawtin, Dan Bell, Suburban Knight, DJ Funk, Robert Hood and a host of global visionaries to the UK. Then who else can claim to have had Basic Channel play live and introduce a then relatively unknown DJ called Jeff Mills as resident alongside Steve himself. A formidable pairing that has formed the stuff of legend.
Having first released under the guise of The Lost on Perfecto in the late eighties and early nineties, Bicknell's sound took a huge step forward in 1993 with the release of three limited edition EP's on his and long-time partner/co-promoter, Sheree Rashit's Cosmic Records. Now with a considerable catalogue of Steve's own work on the label and various sub-divisions such as Clubtracks and Lost Recordings, Cosmic stands at the forefront of global techno. Offering a new perspective and feel that represents a unique UK perspective that spans elements of African tribalism, layered sonics and altered abstraction with points of reference in Detroit, Chicago, Europe and beyond Lost Recordings is an all encompassing wall of sound driven by bass, rhythm and passion. From musique concrete and batacuda to Kraftwerk and James Brown, Lost Recordings is the spirit of where art and dance meet on level terms. Do you see?
Now a truly international DJ, Steve Bicknell has travelled the world with his unique representation of the Lost dancefloor playing across Europe, Japan, Australia and North America. Although centred around one-off and sell-out word of mouth parties in London, Lost and sister parties Burundi and Charascuro are recognised globally through Bicknell releases, DJing and the sound/vision that they have cultivated. As one of the world's most challenging and progressive producers and some ten years in the making this is the first artist album from Steve Bicknell. Time to get Lost in music.
