Biography of Cristian Varela

Cristian Varela is internationally recognized as the most prominent and charismatic Spanish DJ and producer of the moment. This distinction is guaranteed by one of the most prestigious firms of vanguard electronic music (PRIME, London), as well as chief figures in the industry worldwide that have had the privilege in sharing the booth with him, not to mention fellow producers that work within the same record labels that he does or have had remixes conducted by Cristian.

This young artist from Madrid with more than 11 years of experience, has played in each and every one of most important clubs and festivals nationally, and within the past six years has also participated in many events internationally.

He has participated in events of such magnitude as: Love parade (Berlin), Techno Parade (Paris), I Love Techno (Belgium), Neuraleptic (Belgium), Nature One Festival (Germany), Liberty (U.K.), Maniac Love (Japan), It Feels so Real (Tolouse), L.O.V.E. (Sao Paulo), Techno Trax (Madrid), Esparrago Rock (Spain), May Day (Spain) and has played in countries like the U.S.A., Holland, Canada, Brazil, Russia, many countries within Eastern Europe such as Slovenia, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Colombia and the Chechen Republic.

As a disk-jockey, Cristian Varela is known, above all, for his pure sets using three turntables and featuring an elegant and rigorous musical selection that portrays his individual style. Using the pseudonym of Carlos Duran, he depicts his ingenuity in the House realm.

Presently, as a producer, he is working for the most significant record labels such as Primate Records (UK), Primevil (UK), Additive (UK), Elephanthaus (Chicago), PV (Germany), Production Session (Belgium), Highland Beats (Holland) in which he has released more than 33 productions and is reaping infinite success by being included in some of the most important compilations and practically entering all the charts worldwide. He has also completed remixes for such artists in the caliber of Speedy J, Tim Baker, Marco Bailey, Pascal F.E.O.S., Verdi & Farfa.

In December of 2000 he released his much anticipated album debut “New Electronic Audio Arquitectures,” distributed in Spain by Serial Killer Vinyl. This album clearly confirms that Cristian Varela is one of the most significant artists in electronic music of this new millenium.

Cristian is also the proprietor and artistic director of two of the most consolidated record labels internationally, “Pornographic” (Techno) and the new “DonkeyHead” (House)- yet another verification of his versatile personality and prolific character. Both labels have such an underground feel to them and feature collaborations with artists like Umek, Tim Baker, Massaya, Qyuhey, Bando.

Past year 2001 was clearly prosperous for Varela and it was even more delightful when he was honored in DeejayMags 2001 Awards, where he received awards in the categories of “Best DJ of the Year”, “Best Techno DJ” and “Best Recorded Session (for the Salon de Mezclas mixed by Cristian Varela & Tony Verdi).”

Comment: THis is an awesome mix of hard techno, minimal, tech-house and classic Detroit. I was introduced to Varela's releases on Primate years ago and I must say that his DJ style is in direct correlation with his productions. So if you are a fan of his tracks, I'd definitely give this a listen. You won't be sorry.
