Biography of Phil Banks

I started collecting dance-music around 1985, when through my friends older brother I was exposed to electro funk & the breakdance scene, I continued to buy electro, hip-hop & by the end of the 80's house....1990 I went to a rave & then!?................

...............that was 17 years ago, since then I've spent the majority of my time buying music, promoting parties, DJing, meeting like-minded people & indulging in the lifestyle that comes with the fore-mentioned, quite frankly 'I love it!'.

Our current party 'Musicismypoison' has been running for well over a year & evolved from our previous night 'Deadfly' which had been running for 5 years...we changed venue & refined the music ethos, in turn changing the name to suite...the outcome being an ongoing series of parties, with an uncompromising, well thought about but very open-minded music policy, a decent sound-system, decent friendly people, held in 'no glam' dark spaces for people to shake their ass & relax in! Some of the DJ's we've brought to Plymouth (and some of our other parties) over the past 7 years include:- Kelvin Andrews (Soul Mekanik), Mudd (Rong Records) / Silver Bobs Disco Meltdown, James Holroyd (Backtobasics), Phil Mison (Reverso 68), Balearic Mike, Unabombers (Electriks), Sancho Panza, Bill Brewster (DJ History), Stuart Patterson (Faith), Chicken Lips, Jon Marsh (Beloved), Justin Harris (MFF), Miles Hollway (Paper), Rob Bright (BuggedOut!), Crazy Penis, Billy Scurry, Paul Woolford, Moonboots, Daniel Donnachie, Kelvin Brown (Eyes Down), Strut Records, Rob B (Stereo MC's), Mark Rae, Aim, Riton, Onlychild, Peter Parker (Fingathing), DJ Milo (Wildbunch), Ben Wijay, Greg Wilson (Nuphonic/Tirk), Deepsoul3, Rob J (Bam Bam), Hugh Herrera (Candelas), Jolyon (Lowlife), Diesel (X-Press2)...the list goes on.

As a DJ I've been spinning records for 12 years, playing around Dublin for 7 years (played Mono, Hub, Witness Festival), a few gigs in Europe over the past two years...with more in the pipeline 2007, recent UK gigs have included Thekla (Bristol), Society (Sheffield), Hupendi (Stoke), Earwax (Exeter), UFO (Plymouth), Wax The Van (Exeter), Love Thy Neighbour (@ Public Life -London)...plus our own parties in Plymouth & the surrounding areas... past residencies and promotions include: the second coming of seminal South West clubnight 'Cultural Vibes' where I DJ'ed with Digit, Jack, Digs and Woosh, Simon DK, Kelvin Andrews, Dave Mothersole, Richard Grey and the very talented DJ/promoter Verdi, co-promoted Chameleon in Exeter (voted best small club-night in the South West 2005) where I brought the likes of Bill Brewster, Unabombers and Daniel Donnachie to the city, various Southwest outdoor events including Parklife and Maker Sunshine Festival, a weekly Saturday residency at Ride which lasted for 3 years, Mono (Dublin)...plus loads of one-off events and in-house promotions, international radio slots etc...... to find out about any of our forthcoming events go here - www.musicismypoison.com .

My day job consists of Graphic Design & Screenprinting, so if you want any cool tshirts printed for your party/club-night/record label or whatever give me a shout, I'm the man for the job...I've worked for the same company for 16 years, you could say I know my job quite well.
