Biography of Tarmo Vannas
Tarmo Vannas, born in January 1982, has been active in the local underground dance music scene in Tallinn, Estonia, for over 10 years. He runs the TechTribe organization, promoting quality progressive electronic dance music in Estonia. Resident DJ for TechTribe events. He has a weekly radio show TechTribe Essentials, 1-hour upfront progressive electronic dance music hot-mix, broadcasted on various web stations including ETN.fm (Progressive Channel) and DLA Radio, also broadcasted on nation-wide FM station Radio 2 in Estonia, on air every Friday night. He also has a monthly show on very popular friskyRadio web station and hosts a podcast on the TechTribe website. Hundreds of listeners around the world tune in to his shows to check out the latest quality progressive electronic dance music sounds from around the globe.
From an early age of 6 Tarmo started listening to the likes of Queen, INXS, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, New Order, Shamen, KLF and Leftfield while growing up in an environment where electronic equipment was always around. Being already a computer freak the music from Kraftwerk and Jean Michel Jarre was the next big influence for him. He then got more interested in music production, from that point on, there have been countless hours spent in front of computers, developing his skills and working on the production. While the original progressive house and early trance sounds came out of UK and rest of the World, he fell in love with the magical underground dance music world, listening to everything from deep house to hardcore for a short period of time. His personal style developed more in the direction of tech house and atmospheric drum&bass music. During the period of 1995-2000 he had many tracks played on local radio stations and featured on compilations, also got released his music on cassettes and CDs for the local market. He even performed his music live with an 8-piece band on electronic and acoustic instruments. DJ'ng and performing has always been a part of his life as well, organizing events at school, playing music on cassette tapes, which back in the days was pretty much the only possible way. In the mid 90s, while making the school radio program, he started buying and playing out vinyl.
The style and type of the music he is playing has the main criterion that it's good quality music - playing what he feels is the most upfront and developing style of the moment as well as classic sounds that are timeless. At the present his musical direction has evolved into something more unclassified, a mixture of sounds varied from deep ambient to lush melodic to dark hypnotic peak-time progressive sounds - house, techno, minimal, breaks and trance are just elements combined together to form the progressive sounds he is playing.
He has a list of original productions and collaborations currently in the making, also some remix work is under way. His latest track 'Topaz' has already gained early support from Jody Wisternoff and Satoshi Tomiie, and is now signed to Proton Music with remixes from a list of top names in the scene to be released in summer 2007. Back in 2005 his remix of Digital Witchcraft's 'Fingerpaint' for Proton Music remix competition gained support from the likes of Perry O'Neil, Above & Beyond, Greg Benz, Andy Moor, Bobina, Niklas Harding, Matthew Adams and so on. Continuing with his TechTribe radio shows, playing at various clubs and events, and work on the production and remixes, he is now ready to build his DJ/producer career into international territories. Remember to watch out for this name...
