Biography of J-Lab

Jon Dickens aka J-Lab has been making and performing music for 18 years, as a bass player in bands, programmer, producer and remixer. The concept behind J-Lab is electronic laptop-based music improvised live, either for the dance floor or the chill.

Back in the day when he played in bands, Jon was occasionally let out of the vomit-filled dressing room circuit to grace bills with the likes of Underground Resistance and Chemical Brothers. After stints putting on free parties, co-running a studio and label, putting out various 12 inches and albums, working with media celebrities with others, Jon cut loose to rethink and discover what inspired him in the first place and find like-minded people who had the passion.

J-Lab's live improvised concept was inspired partly by his work as part of the core of Laptop Jams. During the last 3 years, the J-Lab concept has been honed to the point where every gig since November 2003 has been recorded, every performance reflecting the mood of the event. The portability of laptops, musical spontaneity, the desire to lay the funk down hard and blow people's heads off, the tedium of programming with a mouse and the love of live performance has led J-Lab to this point.

Next up for J-Lab is more gigs, some releases and the inevitable website, which will be at www.j-labmusic.com one day. Honest!
