Matt Wilsher, better known as Wilsh, is the latest addition to the Inperspective family, brought on board first and foremost for his superb DJing skills.
Growing up 'out in the sticks' in Buckinghamshire, Wilsh wasn't exposed to dnb as early as a lot of old skool dnb heads. 'I grew up listening to electro thanks to one of my older brothers. I was very vaguely aware of the acid house era, but I was diverted into more rock/heavy metal territory for a few years, whilst still following electro through the likes of Kraftwerk. By the early 90s I was listening to Marillion and New Order, but I began to find pirate radio stations while playing with my radio. Being out in no-man's land, the reception wasn't good, but I think Don FM managed to reach out that far! At first I hated it, but I was intrigued. So after repeated listening to the same tape over and over, I made the transition from more conventional bands to 'noise', as my parents called it! After that, Fabio, Randall, Hype and Bukem were the guys I looked out for.' Matt continues: 'In about 1994 or 1995, I got my decks. I took my cues from the likes of Randall, Bukem, Fabio and Bailey. Randall in particular - he's just so smooth, that style of mixing... it's my idea of perfection. The versatility of those DJs too - that's what I strive for, but I'll always have one eye on the dancefloor.'
Wilsh began to establish a name as a somewhat accomplished deck technician, first locally and then further afield, with the number of bookings he received growing in and around London. In 2002 his DJing skills were recognised by ATM magazine, who selected him for the final of the ATM/Trouble on Vinyl DJ competition from around 1000 competitors. With guest spots at events such as Traffic and Gridlock and residencies on a number of net-based radio stations, Wilsh's profile began to expand even further. His mind ever open to different beats, it wasn't long before Wilsh became a regular face in the crowd at Technicality. The across the board music policy appealed to Wilsh's versatile side, and it wasn't long before he presented Chris Inperspective with a demo mix CD. Chris was on the phone the next day, and Wilsh made his Technicality debut in February 2004.
Whilst his DJing goes from leap to bound, Wilsh plans to broaden his horizons this year, with his first forays into production. 'Well, I’ve got Blu Mar Ten’s old sampler at home, so I might as well put it to good use,' he says. With his own dubs as ammunition, this year looks set to be his biggest year yet!
