Biography of Adam Beyer

Adam Beyer became dedicated to the fascinating world of rhythm early on. After playing the drums as a teenager his obsession turned to the decks. In 1990 he bought his first set of turntables and started spinning a wide range of hiphop, hiphouse, acid and techno at local parties and clubs. Beyer soon learned how to blend his sets in a thoughtfull and highly focused way, a talent that has now developed into his trademark style.

In 92 Fellow school friend Peter Benisch introduced Beyer to the sampler , a year later they got their first record deal with New York based Direct Drive. After finishing school in 1995, Beyer started work at the Planet Rhythm record store while releasing some tracks under a variety of names and continually djing all over Scandinavia. Adam Beyer sites Drumcodes 1 (Planet Rhythm 1995) as the first record to define his style; hard, percussive and loop oriented. This 12' names Beyer´s future label and was soon followed by his critically acclaimed debut album Decoded (Planet Rhythm 1996).

His need to create the perfect dj tool gave rise to the launch of the Drumcode label allowing him total musical freedom. The label´s strong concept and high production levels meant it enjoyed immediate success. After six releases Beyer launched his second label Code Red focusing on a slightly softer side of techno. Code Red finished with its 10 th and final release Stand Down (Code Red 1999) which was a compilation of remixes from various international artists.

His production skills soon brought Beyer to the attention of djs worldwide and global bookings soon followed. His meteoric rise has been cited as one of the catalysts for Swedish techno´s current influence. He pinpoints the Stockholm sound as being closely linked to his network of friends in the city aswell as the triumvirate of himself, Joel Mull and Cari Lekebusch. After many releases and remixes on various labels he launched the second album Protechtion (Drumcode 1999).

While the market was being flooded with monoton loop oriented techno Beyer worked on strengthening the arrangements that characterised his earlier works, aswell as adding melodic strings. Still with a clear focus on the dance floor. The same year Adam Beyer and Cari Lekebusch linked up to create a stunning live act first witnessed in London to instant acclaim. The act created the intense feeling of a creative dj set while the duo played back to back mixing their production styles.

Comment: SICK stuff here....it's a mix with minimal style, yet with harder edge drums/dancibility to take out any possiblity of falling asleep like some minimal sets are known for...Sounds like minimal is evolving into and merging with tech house more...

Comment: This is a truly amazing set from Adam Beyer. It's the typical sound you'd expect; the hard edge of minimal, and proggy in places. A four hour set always comes with the risk of becoming boring; but not here. Beyer throws in enough great records and his mixing is seamless throughout, it keeps things interesting.

All in all, a killer set, and highly recommended.

Comment: typical Beyer set...perfect mixing but seems to go nowehere for 30 mins at a time! :-) some good tunes here and there but too many mediocre tracks played for their entire duration... Beyer is obviosuly a legend of a producer but as a dj his sets just dont cut it for me...not enough energy or something...worth a listen all the same..

Comment: Four hours of joy!

There are a fair few comments up here saying that it gets a bit boring in places due to the fact that it's a full four hours live in the mix and that he takes half an hour to progress anywhere. Well yeah, it's four hours long, so people who are looking for Jeff Mills style 70 tracks in an hour type mixing probably will be disappointed at the rate at which this progresses.

But for the patient among us, the rewards are there to be had. This is an absolutely blistering mix, encompassing many styles of the harder edge of Techno; ranging right through from the lighter Housier styles to harder edged, almost Acid Techno in places.

Sit back, get comfy, get into cruising mode and enjoy. This is a tour de force of Techno at its best which is impeccably mixed by Beyer. The sound quality is half decent too.

Comment: This mix is just brilliant! I strongly recommend downloading this.

It is a 4 hour mix (at 128kbps) and that is a lot of music to take in (hence, I suspect, some of the poor reviews). If you don’t want to sit around for 4 hours to decide if you like this set I would recommend taking in the first 40 minute chunk which is just phenomenal before taking in the whole mix. This first part is hard and funky and nearly perfect in every way. Great tracks, great swinging beats, just great.

For those who are not intimidated by a 4 hour mix this is great from beginning to end! But the effect of the set is highly enhanced by listening on a system where you can boost the bass levels. I think this takes care of any moments that might otherwise feel repetitive.

One of my (many) favorite moments occurs around minute 33 where it sounds like AB layers a stripped down Plastikman (?) track (just the drum roll) with another track. The effect is really nice. One of those moments where a song splits into two semi-autonomous movements taking you mind down two paths at once. Despite this divergence the mix remains united and doesn’t get messy at all.

At minute 39 there is a nice trancey moment in the mix. The mix opens up a bit at this point to tracks that play more with higher toned effects, they feel more spatially open and lighter. The next track has a male vocal over it which leads to a break down. Then it’s back into a tech-housey affair. If 4 hours of techno is too much for you this is a great place to chop up the mix (before minute 47).

When the break down is over the mix takes on a tech-house feel (with an emphasis on the tech part). The mix and track around 1:05 is really great – another momentary high point in the mix for me. This brings us back up into a short techno section. Then he gives the dancers a bit of time to catch their breath. 1:36 is where he lays down something that sounds like progressive house along side a simple techno beat to nice calming effect. But surprisingly that prog element transforms into a siren sound similar to Joey Beltram’s Fork Lift track (though not as intense) – no rest for the wicked.

Here (over the next hour and a half) the mix grooves along with good, hard, and funky techno tracks with occasional slow tracks and one atmospheric moment which gives everyone a bit of a break (especially people dancing). The contrast from these more sedate moments is what really provides an appreciation of how damn funky and crushing some of the harder moments are. Without contrast it would have been too much for me – especially at four hours.

There was another really nice moment for me at 3:01:40. A few seconds before there is a small bump in the recording and so my attention turned to audio quality. Instead of more trouble I was treated to one of my favorite sections in the mix with heightened awareness – it’s a nice mix into a plonky techno jam and then on to some funky swinging tunes. Quite nice!

At 3:34 there is some steel drum-esque swinging funkiness with small emphasis on calming down the mix. There are soulful elements and much more serene beats at this end of the set. This part of the mix definitely does not have the hard edge that the earlier parts of the mix. If the hard parts are too hard for you jump over to the end of the mix to see if there is something that can salvage the download for you. If the calming wrap up of the set is too weak, just jump back to the beginning. There’s enough to go around here.

I read once that the biggest problem with jury selection (in court cases) is that people have set their judgment before the trial has even begun. Everything that is said in the trial is selectively retained to affirm the judgment the person has already formed. That was the case for me with this mix. I read that the mix was boring and so the first three times I listened to it I couldn’t find anything at all to like about it. I let some time pass and then decided to listen to this again. I was absolutely shocked on how I could miss out on all the incredible songs and mixing here! I would recommend people downloading this just listen to the first 40 minutes a few times before going through the whole mix. 4 hours can be really overwhelming and it would be a shame for anyone to miss out on all the great stuff in this mix.

Also, Adam Beyer was at the decks for 4 hours… He has to keep himself fresh and entertained up there too and so he does move the sound around and (like misterfish’s review says,) let tracks play out for the better part of their duration. If you are complaining that the mix is 4 hours just cut it into pieces and listen to your favorite part. This is a great mix! Enjoy it!
