Biography of Ryan Elliott

Upstart Detroit DJ Ryan Elliott has gained notoriety over the past few years by programming sets that are as well crafted and sophisticated as they are danceable. From ice cold minimal techno to summery house beats, Elliott has played both big rooms and martini bars with equal success. As a DJ, Ryan is adept in the late night hours, finding the balance between heavy floor tracks and elegant crowdpleasers. Utilizing 3 decks, multiple audio sources, and outboard effects are par for the course, and Elliott employs them with the utmost skill to keep crowds engaged. With a fervent interest in the emerging international techno scene, he is a walking dictionary of artists, labels, and releases. Elliott started his Tuesday night events at Ann Arbor's Goodnight Gracie with Matthew Dear in 2002 and has brought back energy to the city's nightlife. Ryan Elliott was also asked to be a resident at Detroit's Untitled weekly alongside Dear, Tadd Mullinix, Mike Servito and Derek Plaslaiko.

Biography of Matthew Dear

It didn't take long for Ann Arbor, MI's Matthew Dear to catapult himself into the front rank of microhouse producers, emerging in the early 2000s with a string of high-quality releases for Spectral Sound, Plus 8, and Perlon (under several aliases). Born and raised in Texas, Dear first discovered electronic music at age 16; he later attended the University of Michigan, where he met future Ghostly International label founder Sam Valenti IV. He started DJing at parties and eventually moved into production. In late 1999, he and Daisha teamed up to deliver the inaugural Ghostly 12' release, 'Hands Up for Detroit.' Dear wound up on Ghostly's more dance-oriented subsidiary Spectral Sound, for which he debuted in 2001 with the 12' 'Irreparably Dented'; another, 'Stealing Moves,' followed in 2002. That year, Dear signed to Richie Hawtin's Plus 8 label under the alias False, and issued three 12' singles of minimalist house up through early 2003, which were later gathered on a self-titled CD compilation. 2003 was his busiest year yet: as Jabberjaw, he released the 'Girlfriend' 12' on Berlin's Perlon label, and returned to Spectral Sound for EP1 and EP2 that summer. Late in the year, he released his first-ever full-length album, Leave Luck to Heaven, also on Spectral Sound. Titled after the loose English translation of the word 'Nintendo,' the album earned positive notice from a number of publications, and spun off the highly acclaimed single 'Dog Days.' The Backstroke EP followed in 2004.

Comment: I rarely throw down a 10, but this was a fantistic set and it was so fun to be a part of. A splendid night to dance away to. These 2 fellas are really making me move lately, so I suppose I appreciate Detroit and Ann Arbor more so today than I have in the past. Good eyes and ears ysp!!! Jump on this if you know what's good for ya. Oh yeah did I forget to mention, OVER 3hours long. Yep, pure glitchy techno bliss - Ahhhhhhh!! :-D

Comment: Really enjoyed this set and wish I would have been in attendance. Lots of good sounds from these two and with it clocking in at over three hours it almost makes me wish I was still at my old job (not that I have a new one, but oh well) and sitting there playing with spreadsheets (long sets like this used to make the time fly by when I closed my office door, put on my headphones, put my phone on DND, and hammered away at spreadsheets).

Comment: slow pace throughout, but constant bleeps n other sounds help keep it interesting, but over 3hrs of it is a bit much. cool chillin out at home but in a club i'd be bored.

Comment: the sound quality is a bit better than poor and makes me overall-rate this one with an 8. better sound quality would perhaps reach until 10. the track-selection is nice and the mixing good, so that i prefer to see one of them in a club instead of listening to this set...

Comment: I liked it a lot! honestly though, there are so many new minimal djs. Idono its just kinda wierd, I LOVE THE STYLE, dont get me wrong. I guess its just a required taste, Its just a little hard to keep up with. Keep it up though, I love the minimal parites. Hearing the style spun live is breath taking.

Comment: This is another emission from the bright new star on the Minimal/Tech/groove scene. This is not what I would classify as his best work, and yet that's a high standard to keep, so one has to expect the occasional dip in form. But who can blame this guy from spreading himself so much? The chance to play each night on great sound systems.
