Because Curtis Chip has been playing drums since he was very young, this zod artist has a very musical way of thinking about rhythm. The dense poly-rythms and syncopation (coupled with a gift for sound design) that he incorporates into his songs are what separates him from other artists in electronic music. Curtis Chip's involvement in experimental music started when he began playing bass in the death-metal band Exhaust Cube when he was 14. From there he quickly got interested in electronic music, and with his brother Adam, purchased some gear and started the hard techno duo Narcotic. Around this time he also got interested in djing drum and bass. Under the pseudonym DF1 he has djed at countless clubs and parties. Recently he has given his full attention to producing. This is more than apparent on his new E.P. Finely crafted and highly original, tracks on the record range from frantic drum and bass with sweeping melodies and urgent synth lines, to dark, distorted sound-scapes, sculpted from pure sound, all with the signature syncopation he is known for. For his percussion sounds, he often samples his own drumming, and later chops it up and re-edits it into a densely woven web of rhythm. For his live show, he is working on incorporating live instrumentation into his electronics, and has been known to jam with zod artist EmotionalJoystick. (Could a side project be in the works?) --yes, yes it could.. and probably is.
