Biography of Jason Cortez
Jason Cortez has quickly established himself as one of the fastest rising DJ's on the Scottish club scene and arguably the biggest hard-dance name North of the Border. With a career that have spanned 8 years, a lot of hard work, determination and a passion for music and the scene has seen him get the recognition and status he now has.
Jason cut his teeth in DJing by playing backrooms of mid week student nights throughout the mid nineties, playing a mixture of house and trance classics to crowd ranging from 200 to over 1000. With this experience behind him he was made resident alongside Andy Farley & Rachel Auburn at Oxygen in Edinburgh's offshoot club night, Crash. With guest slots across central Scotland in June 2001 Jason set up the now hugely successful Nuklearpuppy night in Edinburgh, giving clubbers in the capital a night in which to lose their inhibitions and let their hair down to a soundtrack of the finest hard-dance and tuff trance.
Nuklearpuppy and has gone on to become Scotland's most popular and infamous hard-dance night, both with the people who have frequented it and with the guest DJ's that have had the pleasure of playin upload new imageg there. Recently, the clubs growing reputation for great events has seen it pick up nominations by Mixmag for 'Best Scottish club 2003' & from The Hard-dance awards for 'Best small club in Britain'. In three years Nuklearpuppy has run over 100 events & tours across Scotland in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Dundee, Fife, Inverness and more, entertaining countless clubbers along the way. Whilst playing at and running Nuklearpuppy, Jason has been lucky enough to have graced the decks alongside leading lights within the scene including, Judge Jules, Fergie, Anne Savage, Eddie Halliwell, Yoji Biomehanika, JFK(Passion), The Tidy Boys(Tidy Trax), BK(Nukleuz), Nick Sentience, Rob Tissera, Don Diablo, Hennes & Cold, Adam Sheridan(Goodgreef), Mark Kavanagh(Trade), Justin Bourne, Phil Reynolds, Spencer FreelandFrantic), Paul Maddox(Tidy Trax), Ingo(Tidy Trax), Charlotte Birch(Sundissential), Jay Pidgeon, Nick Lunn(Storm), Simon Foy(Insideout) and many, many more.
Playing alongside this calibre of star and to crowds varying from 300 to over 1000 and working with brands such as Nukleuz, Tidy Trax, Sundissential, Goodgreef and Storm, has helped Jason to perfect his DJing skills. His entertaining sets never fail to please, playing varied styles to best suit the clubs and crowds, from tuff trance and techno tinged house right through to dance-floor friendly hard-dance and uplifting hard-house, cutting, scratching and dropping accapellas along the way.
In a short time, Nuklearpuppy and Jason have blazed a trail across the dark skies of Scotland's club-scene. The passion and enthusiasm that he brings where ever he plays is infectious, this has helped him break onto the hard to crack English scene with gigs at some of the South's biggest nights Frantics Hard House Academy(London), Storm(Coalville) & Hotdog(Nottingham). Most recently he was both pleased and proud to play at Insideout in Glasgow on New Years Eve 2003, entertaining the crowd at both Midnight till 1am, then 3am till 4am, if that wasn't enough he also played for Goodgreef & Promise in Newcastle on New Years day 2004 in the Mixmag Future heroes room.
With Nuklearpuppy's recent nomination by Mixmag for 'Best Scottish club 2003', Jason & side kick Phil York took the club on tour throughout March and April 2004, playing across Scotland in Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Oban & Inverness as well as heading to England to play Frantic's Hard House Academy(London), Storm(Coalville), Digital(Lincoln), XS(Middlesborough), Xstatic(Wakefield), Sessions(Leeds) & Heat(London). With a follow uo tour planned for September 2004 and planned international dates in Ibiza, Australia, New Zealand and Canad, Scotland's dynamic hard-dance master plan to be one of the countries hottest clubbing exports.
Out with running the most successful hard-dance nights in Scotland and a thriving DJing career, Jason is now enjoying success as producer. His first tracks in collaboration with fellow Nuklearpuppy resident Phil York, were picked up quickly with the first being released on the ever reliable and respected Recharge Records. 'Freaks' was released on Recharge in December to critical acclaim in the music press, with Mixmag's reviewer Guffy putting it at number 3 in the hard-dance review section in January's issue, saying that the track was 'A techno influenced hard-house number that oozes atmosphere, with a big piercing vocal and some twisted effects helps this hit home'. Their second release is on London club Heats new label, Heat Vinyl, the track, 'Reality' will be the labels second release, and is sure to share the same success as their first release. On a slightly trancier vibe, the track has been getting support from some of the scenes leading figures including Phil Reynolds and Nick Rafferty. That was followed up with their debut release on the World biggest underground dance label, Nukleuz. '88mph' came out in May as part of the ever successful Hard trance EP series. A huge hit which was charted by DJ's the length and breadth of the country. To top a fast rise up the hard-dance ladder they have had another 3 tracks signed to Nukleuz and are remixing Lisa Pin Up's new track for the label.
Other highlights in Jason recent career include a cover-mount CD and double page feature in Augusts issue of M8 Magazine with a follow up double page feature in May's edition of M8 and a guest mix in December on Scotland's premier dance radio station Beat 106. With follow up tracks planned for Recharge Records and Heat Vinyl in 2004 as well as other leading labels, the setting up of Nuklearpuppy records, support and coverage in M8 Magazine and Mixmag, and having been made residents at Lashed and Tidy events in Scotland, Jason Cortez is one DJ that looks sure to get even bigger across his native Scotland and break into the English market as well as representing the Scottish dance scene Worldwide.
