Biography of Rob Salmon

Rob Salmon has traveled far in both miles and music. Growing up in Auckland, New Zealand, Rob made his first mark in music as resident DJ for NZ's pioneering house club, The Box. Hooked by the fresh wave of dance music coming out of the US and UK, Rob started drawing a loyal following at The Box from 1990 to 1995, dropping the newest and most underground mix of House, Techno and Hip-Hop.

While rocking the floor every Friday and Saturday night at The Box, Rob also moonlighted as a scratch DJ for kiwi hip-hop outfit Urban Disturbance - who went on to win the Best New Band at the New Zealand Music Awards in 1993.

In order to pursue his true passion for House, Rob packed up and moved to New York in 1995. After reaching top DJ status in NZ, Rob initially struggled to break into the DJ scene in NYC. Never one to throw in the towel, Rob worked days as a hotel clerk at the seedy, but legendary Hotel 17. By night he mixed CD compilations and persistently harassed club promoters until landing his first break. XVI in Manhattan's hip East Village were so impressed, they immediately hooked Rob up with his own Saturday night residency, Angelic. Happily back behind the controls he rapidly built the night up drawing a faithful, funky and always freaky following.

In 2000, Rob bumped into Rob Rives (Floppy Sounds) in a record shop. The two got chatting, ideas and tastes in music were tossed around and from there they went on to produce Salmon's inaugural single, the pounding Tech-house tune, 'Running Towards A Dream'. This first outing was quickly snapped up for Yoshitoshi by label bosses Deep Dish. London's Jockey Slut mag listed it as a 'HIT!' single. With the success of the tune, Rob became an in-demand guest spinner at Centro-Fly, Fun, Filter 14 and other clubs along the east coast.

Rob's seamless spinning style and the success of 'Running Towards A Dream' led fabled distributor Northcott to ask him to produce a mix CD. The result was the cutting edge 'Selections' - a series showcasing many of the city's top underground house music players.

With such a buzz surrounding his first single, Deep Dish requested a follow up. Rob and Rives delivered the 2nd Yoshi track 'Body Talk'. Next step for Rob was the remix front. He reworked Spanish DJ Lima's 'Take U' (Micasa NYC). With Kenny Jenkins, he updated Human League's 'Love Action' (EMI UK), turning the electro-pop 80's classic into a Miami Bass style pounder.

After years of living in the madness that is New York, Rob decided to base himself back in NZ to put in some serious studio time. He has since written 'Transit' with Magik Johnson which was released on San Fran's Red Melon label. Rob now hosts his own weekly nationally broadcast radio show,
'Drive' on George 96.8 FM as well as running his highly successful club night - Breakdown..
