Biography of Jason Blackkat

JASON BK

founder -- BLACKKAT

DJ / ORGANIZER / PRODUCER / MUSICIAN
contact at : jblackkat@hotmail.com

w/ BLACKKAT NYC:

Jason stole his first Beatles record from his dad at age 9, played in his first punk band in 1986, and started mixing records in the early '90s. He founded Blackkat in NYC in 1996. Since its earliest parties, Blackkat has been well known and respected in the NYC dance music culture for its unique synthesis of hard hitting party music, social activism, and multimedia / art installations / performance. Blackkat has organized and co-organized hundreds of events in New York over the years. Some of the most notable include the annual Mayday party in Tompkins Square Park, events at large scale underground venues such as the Lunatrium, 38Nine, and WildWild Brooklyn, and rally parties against the RAVE Act at City Hall and at the Federal Courthouse. FlyerNYC magazine called Blackkat events 'some of the best parties NYC, let alone Brooklyn, has even seen'. These events have drawn anywhere from 100 to 2000 people. Blackkat has worked with many of the best known DJs and producers in NYC including Frankie Bones, Adam X, Afrika Bambaataa, Kool DJ Red Alert, Dead Prez, Soulslinger, Kool Herc, Lenny Dee, Jazzy Jay, Dara, and many more. Jason has been interviewed by dozens of newspapers, magazines, filmmakers and radio stations such as The Village Voice, The NY Times, The Nation, Time Out NY, BBC Radio, WBAI, WFMU, XLR8R, Muzik, High Times, and Ha'arez (Tel Aviv, Israel).

w/ TOURING SOUND SYSTEMS:

Jason has toured extensively with sound systems from the UK and SF as well as with NYC based crews. In 1997-98 he played at and helped organize over 100 events and gigs while touring the US and Canada with Spiral Tribe, the legendary sound system from the UK. He toured Australia with Bedlam and Negusa Negast sound systems (also both from the UK) in 1999-2000, playing in virtually every large city in Australia and at many outdoor events, going to East Timor with a sound system. He has also toured Europe and the US with the famed avant-noise pop band God is my Co-Pilot, and has DJed all over the US and Canada, at events ranging from free outdoor festivals to 1500+ person 'raves'. He has performed in 14 countries and in over 70 cities on four continents since 1995 . This summer he is touring through Canada and the US with the Havoc Sound System from San Francisco.

MUSIC:

Jason is a skilled bass player and drummer, and spins a very wide variety of music, but he is primarily known for playing driving techno within a broad range of speeds and styles. His focus lately has been the 134-137 BPM percussive and heavy sound, featuring mostly UK based labels such as Red Seal, Blackout, Planet Rhythm, and Subhead (see 'Sixmix' on music page). He also plays 'freetekno', the sound of the post-Spiral tribe traveling sound crews in Europe, primarily from France, on labels such Frogs, Systematek, Infrabass, Gazoule, and Hokus Pokus (see 'Bushwickix' mix). He also is the creator of 'Fuzzpop'. Under the nickname Howie Wreckhords, Jason uses the 'cut Up' methods of Brion Gysin to make analog experimental beats. He plays bass on the new album by CX Kidtronik, availble on Sound Ink records. He has many tracks on CD and vinyl compilations.

Extra:

Jason Blackkat is a DJ and activist devoted to building a politically-conscious dance music subculture. In 1995, he co-founded Manhattan's longest running pirate radio station, 'Steal This Radio,' which became an early rallying point and inspiration for the nascent micro-radio movement. Jason has organized locally and nationally against legislation that restricts dance culture, including New York’s cabaret laws and the RAVE Act. In 1996, he co-founded Blackkat, a collective of artists, musicians, and activists. He has toured and performed with several traveling soundsystems, including Spiral Tribe and Bedlam (both from the UK) and S.P.A.Z. (from San Francisco).
