Biography of Todd Sines Live As .xtrak

Todd Sines was born in the rust belt of Cleveland, Ohio. Ohio was home to urban funk greats such as the Ohio Players, Zapp, White Cherry, Devo and Midnight Starr; contrasted with Todd’s rural childhood surroundings, Ohio laid the groundwork for Todd’s unique synthesis of ideas in sound.

His interest in music began with his affinity for hip hop in 1983. Artists such as Whodini, Newcleus and the Art of Noise served as the inspiration to follow music more closely. Drawing inspiration from post-punk acts such as Cabaret Voltaire, Gang of Four, Sonic Youth, Big Black, Einsturzende Neubauten and My Bloody Valentine, in 1988, he picked up guitar and drums, before settling with bass in his third band with fellow student Mike Szewczyk.

After seeing 808 State for the first time on MTV in 1989, and hearing these early futuristic tracks from Detroit, he decided to produce electronic music. Through interviews for his music and design ‘zine, “Visual Razorblade,” he made his first connections with Detroit’s Mad Mike and Jeff Mills, as well as 808 State, LFO, The Orb, Coil, Meat Beat Manifesto and Emigré’s Rudy Vanderlans, all of which have had a profound influence on his approach to design and music.

After moving to Columbus, Ohio for his college education, Todd and Mike met Titonton Duvanté and Charles Noel. He began a devout interest in synthesizers, after trading his bass for a Roland SH-101, a classic analogue synthesizer. The four started producing music as Body Release, and toured extensively throughout the midwest from 1991–1993. Although the group decided to call it quits in mid 1993, each of them gained valuable experience from working with one another. Todd redirected his efforts to his own productions and also to developing his DJing skills.

During this time, Todd established liaisons with Detroit producers and DJs Paris Mack, Claude Young and Brian Gillespie who traveled down to Columbus for several parties in 1993. Todd met his favorite Detroit producers: Carl Craig and Dan Bell. Both were interested in the different styles of Todd’s music; the minimal tech house funk as .xtrak interested DBX for a release on his 7th City label. Carl was interested in the lush, more melodic sounds he was producing for the Elements of and Experiments With Sound compilation on Planet E in 1994. Todd released his first solo 12” on the UK-based Peacefrog Records as .xtrak shortly after.

As a co-founder of ele_mental, Todd hosted, organized and played several DJ gigs and live PAs over the Midwest from 1993-1997. Over the last four years his touring and releases have taken him from Columbus, Ohio to Barcelona, Basel, Berlin, Bern, Chicago, Copenhagen, Detroit, Feldkirch, Frankfurt, Fribourg, Geneva, Hamburg, Miami, Munich, New York, Nijmegen, San Francisco, Toronto, Vienna, Vigo and Zurich. Appearances at top venues such as Tresor, WMF, Moog, Ultraschall, Catwalk, Toni Mölkerei, Röhstoffläger, Motor Detroit, Cloud Nine, Tribeca & Soho Grand Hotels, with performances at the 2001 Detroit Electronic Music Festival and his group performances with Natacha Labelle at the All Access 2.0 Planet E party, the NYC Creative Time series, and the Una Mas event with Carl Craig + Moonstarr in Toronto have left memorable impressions on fans everywhere.

Todd’s latest release on Planet E is entitled “overlap” and features Montreál vocalist Natacha Labelle. These two are currently working in the studio on a full-length album. Gilles Peterson, the definitive word and tastemaker of today’s neo-soul, house and jazz, recently played “come closer [Moonstarr’s broken dub]” on the 01 May 2003 World Wide show, saying, “...this tune’s just killing me right now... murder!”

The release is also in the playlists of BBC Radio 1’s Benji B, Carl Craig [featured on his recent mix CD, The Workout], Steve Bug [featured on his recent mix CD, da minimal funk 3], Thomas Fehlmann, Soul Phiction, Zip / Dimbiman, Ricardo Villalobos, Moonstarr, Titonton Duvanté; Swag, Charles Webster, Cuki, John Kong, Lil Tony, Alex Attias, Adam Marshall, Ulysses, amongst many others. It also made music journalist + author Dan Sicko’s Top Ten singles for 2002.

He is currently back in the studio for several new projects for some prominent US, English, and German labels, and is actively DJing across the States and Europe. He recently completed a series of remixes for Beta Bodega Coalition of LA’s UltraRed, former collaborator Mike Szewczyk’s latest project, txt, for 21/22, a remix of Compost recording artist Moonstarr’s “dust+water” on the Japanese label P-Vine and Public Transit Recordings, and a remix of the Japanese jazz outfit, Soul Bossa Trio for the Italy’s Irma On Canvas. Additional releases include compilation appearances with Natacha Labelle on the Viennesse Ecco.Chamber broken house / lounge compilation, “destination out vol.2” as well as Michel Baumann’s Philpot Records in Hamburg, Germany.

In addition, Todd is finishing production on a minimal house album, descend. His production schedule for the new year features remix swaps with Charles Webster for his label, Miso Recordings; an album for John Kong’s Do Right!, a fresh, yet highly respected label out of Toronto; and a return to Peacefrog Records, for a third release, following up his successful minimal tech house releases as .xtrak.

Recent recording sessions with vocalists Genevieve Marienette [recorded with Recloose, Justin Chapman, Theo Parrish], African Canadian Ndidi Onukwulu, Polish German Justine Süsser and Sabiil Farias from the Dominican Republic, with jazz musicians James Duncan [trumpet, who records for DFA, Environ, Traxxx and Le Systeme] and Stacy Dillard [tenor sax] will be incorporated into several new projects, challenging the barriers between house, jazz, lounge, hip-hop, indie and experimental genres. He’ll also be working with fellow Ohio-born artist Geoff White on a “versus” project where each artist remixes the other for a full-length album.

Comment: Short, way too short, but really good minimal techno. such a tease. The recording seems to be Ok, not off the board so there is some crowd noise.
